It is yet unclear whether this will effect all imported motorcycles or only CBUs. The prices of motorcycles from countries with which India has trade pacts may or may not be effected. The Kawasaki Ninja is imported in India via Thailand which India has a trade pact with. Triumph recently also was planning to bring in their bikes initially via Thailand. How will this effect the various players in the domestic motorcycle market, will be found out soon.

It has been found out that the increase in Tax will only effect motorcycles above 800cc.

The import duty has been increased from 60% to 75%. A 15 percentage point increase, but a whopping increase of 25% over the earlier import duty.

Well, We were expecting good news but this has just slammed any hopes of these CBUs getting cheaper.
I think what government want these manufacturers to do is to setup atleast CKD shops.

Lets hope some of the manufacturers like Honda & Yamaha setup CKD operations for these big bikes. That is the only way I see these bike becoming cheaper.

I am hopeful that with the success of Harleys (heard that over 3k have been sold), all manufacturers will be eventually forced to come on board and CKD and manufacturing will take priority over direct imports. That should definitely lead to more jobs, more growth and yes.. cheaper big bikes
            Way to go India !

The biggest beneficiary in the big bike market will be Harley Davidson, since they have already started assembling seven models, these seven models will not be effected with this 15% increase in Import Duties.

All other manufacturers bringing in their motorcycles as CBUs will be very badly effected. How much of this increase in Import Duties will they be passing on to the end consumer is anyones guess.

This is throwing water on the hopes of companies who thought that India is a prospective market for big bikes. The big bike market in India was growing at a phenomenal pace for a developing country. But this will be a big speed breaker in the growth pattern.

Would someone interested in buying a superbike, still go ahead with his purchase, or will this hike in rates put-off the prospective superbiker???

                I support the move.

If any maker wants to sell in India at competitive prices then its beneficial for the industry in the long run, to manufacture them here.

True! So what do you think, will the manufacturers set up their CKD assembly/production plant here or just let it go the way it is going or worse, will shut shop?

So far only Harley, Kawasaki has been really serious about India.. and hence assembling in India. But nothing like manufacturing it 100% in India. Like the KTM's. Other than India, no where else on earth can you buy a KTM 200 Duke for 1.5 Lakh Indian rupees..!!

Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki are more interested in selling the "aam aadmi" bikes. The exotic imports are just for that "Image".
Wonder how many numbers can the already expensive BMW and Aprilia rake in further.

There is opportunity in the Indian market.. the makers better take advantage if it.

India has trade agreements with Thailand for automobiles. There have also been talks with the European Union for having a similar trade pact covering automobiles. If that happens, we might very well see the European exotics working out cheaper than the Japs! That would be ironic

For smaller capacity bikes that would make absolute sense, but for the larger capacity bikes, the majority of sales will still be in developed markets.

How profitable would it be to produce larger capacity bikes in India and export abroad.

Taking the example of KTM further, would KTM-Bajaj be willing to produce the RC 8 in India???

The market for 1,000-1,200 cc motorcycles will remain small.. at least for some good 10-15 years in India .

But the 400-600 cc segment can be the next big thing.. provided they are priced according to Indian "pockets" and hence manufactured in India.

Any sort of government price hikes makes me paranoid. Even this did for a while. But after reading the comments, I think this is for good. Someone in the government is thinking smart.
