The Dark Side of Japan revealed: MT-09.

The NEW Yamaha MT-09 (official video Full HD) The Dark side of Japan - YouTube

At the heart of this new bike is the 850cc motor which the firm promises will deliver instant throttle response with lots of low and mid-range torque. Peak power is a claimed 115bhp at 10,500rpm with 62lbft of torque at 8500rpm. This puts it almost bang in the middle of the sort of performance from the Triumph Street triple 675 and the Speed Triple 1050.

In a move that separates Yamaha from the rest of the Japanese bike brands (although not Triumph) it has abandoned the in-line four in an effort to breathe more life into its models. Why has it done this? Yamaha needs a unique selling point to distinguish itself from the 'run of the mill' middleweights and hopefully promote sales. So what have we got?

Caption: Love it, hate it, but why don't you try to ignore it?

    Yamaha's website says:
Yamaha MT-09 is a whole new concept in sport bike design. With a compact new chassis and high-torque 3-cylinder engine, this new generation performance machine is designed for riders who appreciate character and soul.
The beating heart of this new kind of animal is a lightweight 850cc 3-cylinder engine that kicks out a wide band of raw, linear torque giving outstanding acceleration that gets your adrenaline flowing.
And for agile handling this dynamic new naked motard-style bike is equipped with a compact aluminium chassis and upright riding position that make light work of everything - from weekday urban riding through to Sunday morning blasts.

This determines the International Yamaha's future itself. While we may not exactly love it, its hard to disagree that in a world filled up with many many 4 cylinders, triples have their own unique presence. Expect more products from Yamaha on this platform if this succeeds. Something tells me that this motorcycle would be fun to ride. A lot.

Xbhp members, how do you perceive the Dark Side of Japan? Do you see International Yamaha's sales position improving anytime soon, by this move?

Yamaha is the best in Japan when it comes to designing! and good thing for us is that we could expect a visually similar product with the claimed MT dna! Would be even better if it's a 250-300 cc machine.
The 850 is mouth wateringly gorgeous!!

Europe had been truly neglected. The R1 receieved cross plane updates but other motorcycles received no more than asthetic changes.

The MT-09 seems fun. Its the first triple and rumor has it that the R1 will get this next. Yamaha is going to spend its next few years launching 3 cylinder updates to their models. Not really exciting per se.

Duoscribe The FZ 8 will be replaced by the FZ 09, which is around $900 less than the motorcycle it will be replacing.

thats VERY encouraging to read - not to mention i simply LOVE naked bikes [& a few other things *cough*]

i hope & wish that they have identical sentiments towards india as well & they dont merely flood the european markets alone.

yamaha has been perhaps even more ignorant about india & indian bikers than what our politicians are! daymn!

there was a time when i used to dream that there will be a locally made 'hammer' a.k.a. the epic mt-01 & hence affordable to some who aspire to get a ninja or some such machine!
but going by the way yamaha have treated india & indians, i am certainly not gonna realize that dream in this birth!

are they & all other manufacturers, so freaking blind to realize that there is nothing that can to fight it out w/ the kawanja650?

                beats me!

First look, the seating is a bit odd, imho. But power delivery, and the fact that it's a triple just blows over any design issues I might have with this bike. whymail: I don't see why it shouldn't come to India. This bike being a 850cc, shouldn't have any issues in selling here. Plus it's a triple, so it should be cheaper than the biggies that yamaha has to offer here in India. I believe this bike if it comes here, will sit at that sweet spot below fz1 and n650 price-wise.

In my personal view, i just love this! The MT01 is a no-nonsense bike (trust me, having ridden with it i can say that), and the MT09 is a fun bike with attitude on the street. FYI i heard that this will be called FZ09 in europe. read it somewhere but cant recall where. the design is odd from few angles. MT series is like that only

with Yamaha gaining more n more market share every year in India, i think they would consider launching this beast here..
every other big player is also launching high end models and Yamaha should do the same..
as for this one.. it sure looks awesome.. i really liked the sound of it sounds like a beast..
and the specs are also pretty heavy..

                      Ride safe and have fun.

One of the best looking bikes from ole Tuning Fork I have seen in recent times. Fluidly curvy yet sharply edgy. Very difficult design brief for the boffins there. Seems that Yammie has taken a leaf out of the Kawi ER chassis design with that superb flattened X theme. Excellent effort, Yamaha, to get your mojo back. Now comes the tough part - marketing it to the ruthless Asian segment. Should be the forerunner of a common platform in the days ahead, methinks.

Here is some interesting differences between the US and the European models, from this article it looks like Yamaha revealed 2 models, one for Europe and another for the US market.

                              "...
Then there’s the appearance. The American bike is, essentially, identical to the UK version. In some ways it’s uglier (check out the massive orange indicators and reflectors on the forks) but the colour schemes (or should that be color schemes, given they’re American?) are subtly different. And noticeably better.
One of the first comments we received on our original MT-09 story was that it would look better with a black frame instead of the UK bike’s grey one. Well that’s what the US model has. And instead of all-black, the seat unit gets a body-coloured section to liven it up. The red version is red, not the odd orange of the UK model. Our grey version, for some reason, also gets grey fork legs, making the whole bike look like it’s been photographed in monochrome (or that it’s a two-wheeled version of Spitting Image’s old John Major puppet; “Lovely peas, Norma…”). The American grey bike sticks with gold forks, and gets dark blue wheels. It’s interesting to look at."
