re: Yamaha MT-09 Launched: xBhp News

Very "unlike" Yamaha design and I think a bulkier tail would have suited the overall looks better. But as Yamaha has clarified, it doesn't really care whether some people like it or not.

In some ways it’s uglier (check out the massive orange indicators and reflectors on the forks) but the colour schemes (or should that be color schemes, given they’re American?) are subtly different. And noticeably better.
One of the first comments we received on our original MT-09 story was that it would look better with a black frame instead of the UK bike’s grey one. Well that’s what the US model has. And instead of all-black, the seat unit gets a body-coloured section to liven it up. The red version is red, not the odd orange of the UK model. Our grey version, for some reason, also gets grey fork legs, making the whole bike look like it’s been photographed in monochrome (or that it’s a two-wheeled version of Spitting Image’s old John Major puppet; “Lovely peas, Norma…”). The American grey bike sticks with gold forks, and gets dark blue wheels. It’s interesting to look at."

so just because of those minor differences they have different names? i am still in a limbo.

it does not look very good or killer in my opinion, infact, it is more naked than other nakeds in the market, specially looking at the headlamp and taillight assemblies. even angine bay packing is not tight and there are some see through holes.

though the 3 cylinder configuration might turn out to be a winner.

The bike looks superb in my opinion, Yamaha is listing to their customers and working accordingly, I think with 115 BHP its configuration is the best for high range naked bikes....

Doesnt have a patch on MT-01 as far as looks are concerned, in my opinion strictly. Looks terrible.

re: Yamaha MT-09 Launched: xBhp News

I've seen some rarely terrible designs from Yamaha, but for me this one beats it all.
Considering the design, I've loved all their sports and street bikes, but the MT series is something that Yamaha experiments a lot with. The MT-03 was an amazing stunting machine, but didn't sell to much so they scrapped it. MT-01 is a monster. Then there is the FZ1 which is a looker and on that basis came the FZ8, both amazing.
Triples sound great if anyone has actually heard the triumphs. They've got some kind of aura . But apart from that, I don't know on what basis would people buy this.
I'm sure it might be a great handler and fun to ride machine and Yamaha gives quality too. But this doesn't add up to my list of good looking bikes.
Just because you haven't seen it doesnt mean its impossible...expect the unexpected.

Could someone point out the main advantages and disadvantages of 3's against 4's?

A triple is spot on between a twin and an inline 4... Essentially, a balance of both of these.

If we have a 600cc bike which is 4 cylinder, then each cylinder encompasses 150cc's of combustion space.
If its the same 600cc capacity in 3 cylinders, then each cylinder would be 200cc's.

So, 4 cylinder engines have smaller individual cylinders (150cc each in the above example), which means they can rev higher... Why so? Because smaller cylinders generally have smaller "Stroke" values, the distance that the piston travels from uppermost to its lowermost point (or vice versa).

If this distance is a smaller value (Short stroke), then it will encourage higher revving, because Mean Piston speeds are lower for a particular rpm. Piston speeds should not be more than 22-24 metres/ second for a streetbike at its redline.

Triples over Inline 4's: Generally speaking,

More torque in lower parts of the rev range,
                      Lesser engine width,
                      maybe lesser weight too,
                      slightly higher mileage,

Inline 4's over Triples: Generally speaking,

                      higher revving potential,
                      higher maximum power potential,
more power in the top end of rpm range,
smoother exhaust note ("smoother", not necessarily "better sounding")
                      ---
                      Brotherhood, Rules, Freedom. Xbhp.

Great design & a power-packed engine spec sheet will make this a formidable product in the market. I hope they bring it down to India sooner or later - worth the attention. Or, for that matter, I wouldn't mind a lower variant, say 200 or 250 cc. Its high time for Yamaha to introduce something new to the Indian market.
