    Hi Guys,

I am new member to xbhp, just joined here as soon as i heard about Duke390, since then i was following few threads but never replied or posted on anything, this is my first post. A good news which i have is that I have booked my Duke390 and the booking number is "1", yes, i am the first person to book D390 in Banjara hills showroom in Hyderabad.

I am eagerly waiting for the delivery, but the showroom guy says it will take little time may be 2 weeks for the 1st deliveries because the bikes are not RTA approved still and as everyone knows AP's govt is very slow so it may take little more than other cities. So is anyone on this thread who is expecting the delivery in the first week of July?

One guy there did mention that they were EXPECTING and hoping for 100 bookings on day1.

Could be indiranagar and Langford combined as i think their parent is same.
Maybe you were 37th for that particular showroom? Don't know, though. They could just be bluffing to show excess demand, so that people who were planning to wait jump the gun (to avoid insane wait periods).

Lets do some extrapolation. Bangalore has 4 dealers and lets assume KTM Indiranagar has the highest booking. For rest of the dealers lets remove 30% from high. Which results in Bangalore alone ~ 300 Bookings. Average of 75 Bikes

In Mumbai there are 4 dealers, in Delhi 10 dealers, Kolkatta 2 dealers, Pune 2 dealers, Hyderabad 2 dealers, Chennai 1 dealer. So for 21 dealers we got around 1575 Booking.. Rest of India has 45 dealers lets assume there average as 35 Bikes (50% of average of Bangalore). So we got around 1575 booking.

So in total we got around 3450 bookings and lets remove 10% as error margin, we got 3100 Booking in two days..

      Wow..

Even Half of It 1500 Bookings is pretty impressive...
Woah, that is WAY off. Tier 2 towns and below wouldn't have seen more than 5 bikes being booked in all likelyhood. The KTM showroom near my Hometown (in Raipur, CG) sells 10-15 Duke 200s per month, so 35 bookings on Day 1 for 390 is impossible for them.

From what I understand, Bangalore and Mumbai have had maximum bookings, at around 100 each. Delhi 60-ish and it's all downward from there. My guessing would be 500-ish bookings on Day 1.

D200 was released almost a one and half years back. If such an old bike can manage 10 to 15 per month, D390 with its awesome price would definitely manage around 15 to 20 bikes per month.

Even if we take as per your assumption, Bangalore and Mumbai with 8 showrooms each 50 bookings would have got around 400 bookings. For rest of India with 15 bookings per showroom for 62 showrooms we would get around 930 Bookings.. So approx 1000 bookings which is again pretty impressive..

Even half of that 500 bookings on Day1 is impressive for 2L bike.. So we can safely assume KTM will sell 1500 - 2000 on first month.

Awesome or not, understand that it still costs MORE. Which means lesser sales than 200 Duke. The 200 Duke being older doesn't mean they sell lesser. Splendour is decades old and it still sells truckloads. As a matter of fact 200 Duke volumes are on a rise.

And my "assumption" is not an assumption. It's an approximated guess from the actual booking numbers that people have told me.

Also, most "showrooms" in a city are run by the same dealership, so the numbers are combined, not every individual showroom. Bangalore sold it's 1000th Duke in 15th (or 14th, not sure) month of its release, so if you assume 200 bookings on day 1 for a more expensive bike, it's not hard to see the flaw in logic.

I don't think all Bajaj dealers are entitled to sell KTM bikes. Only Probiking outlets. Delhi NCR may have 4 PBK outlets.

I'm surprised that folks from other cities know their booking number! KTM Bundgarden Pune did not provide any booking number even after asking. There is no such booking number on the forms that I signed either. Upon entering the showroom, I asked the sales guy how many have been booked, he replied 80. After an hour of checking out all the KTM and Kawasaki bikes on display, made the booking payment and asked the desk guy how many have been booked, he replied 65. This was yesterday.

People don't seem to understand that it's VERY hard to harm a modern engine by revving/using the engine in certain way during the run-in period. Doing wheelies doesn't hurt the engine, it only hurts the clutch (which is a consumable, like brakes or batteries anyways). So, even in an unlikely chance of them doing a couple of wheelies on your particular bike, it won't show any ill effects... stop being paranoid and go book one.
Do you have any sources to justify your claim "wheelies don't hurt the engine, they only hurt the clutch"??

                If I'm being paranoid that's only after reading a dozen articles about bike running in. If you haven't read one, start with this one: http://b i k e a d v i c e.in/run-bike/

Because I understand the mechanics of how a motorcycle works, for starters. Pretty much the only way to hurt the engine while doing a wheelie is maintain the wheelie for kilometes at a strech, which would deprive the engine of lubrication and hence cause friction wear.

I tend to stay away from this particular argument because of brainwashed close-minded nature of the masses. Rest assured, i've done way more than my fair share of reading about motorcycles. But if you feel interested, google for "motoman's run-in". Obviously, no one is stopping you to run-in your bike in a way other than you please.

I agree to your point. But I saw a video review by overdrive about some superbike in India where Shumi mentioned that it had revs limited for run-in period. I was just wondering if KTM could also do that just to be on the safer side.

As another person mentioned earlier, the so called "rev limiter" is only a light that comes up on the console (set at 7k out of the showroom). You can choose to go beyond that rpm at your discretion (the red light will just remain lit-up beyond that). The rpm at which you want the red light to come up, can be set from the console (you can do it yourself). The real rev-limiter cuts the engine power at 10.5k rpm and that limit cannot be changed without tinkering with the ECU.

Long story short : The only rev limiter is at 10.5k rpm.

Edit : I am pretty jobless at office today and i decided to click your link.

Hmm...I know that and I just wish they do an ECU re-program to allow revs beyond 7k only after completing 1000 km.

These two articles mention that Bajaj restricts the rpm of Duke 200 at 7500 for the running in period. Do any of the Duke 200 owners have come across such restriction apart from the console red led glowing up?

Dude, what dishayu told you is all 100% to the point. There are no restrictions, and the red light is a "gear indicator" that you know when you reach a certain rpm so you can shift gear optimally. And the engine will be perfectly fine if it gets revved to higher rpms for shorter times.
Have no worries about it, and if you want this bike just go and book it. Just use you common sense, like with every other bike inspect it before delivery, make sure everything is OK.

This mind set about babying your bike during the first 1000 km is very deep rooted, and I'm sure you can find dozens of sites where they'll tell you to baby your bike as much as possible during the first 1000 km and then you're free to rip it. But in fact, that couldn't be further from truth. People need to realize that this isn't a Splendor...
You need to rev your bike every now and then to high rpms for short time in order to break the engine in. Otherwise it CAN'T break in. How? With gentle low rpms?? Sorry, can't.

And even IF the engine is being "mistreated" - just read the specs of D390's engine - it's a modern stuff that's made to work at high rpms. It's MADE to be ridden in high rpms. Hence the KTM's "Ready to race"...
