Kolkata: Thousands of angry cyclists held noisy protests in the centre of Kolkata on Wednesday over a move by the government to ban them from major roads in the congested metropolis.

Under beaming sunshine, they gathered in the Esplanade area of the former colonial capital, chanting "We want cycles back!" and holding placards which read "Turn off your engine. Kids breathe here!"

"Banning cycles in a city like Kolkata does not make any sense. It's a crazy decision," Gautam Shroff, a spokesman for local cycling group Ride 2 Breathe, told news agency AFP.

"We wonder when many countries are encouraging cycling in a bid to ease growing pollution, why authorities put a ban on cycling here?" he said.

    News Approved.

I for one, would not accept traffic jams as a reason to ban cycles itself. And seizing cycles of such (apparently) poor people is really a shameful act. A Challan would've been better way to do so. How can you just seize someone's hard earned cycle?
A typical cycle from a reliable Indian brand costs above Rs. 2500 right now (maybe more?)... Heck, even automobile (car, motorcycle, etc.) challans are no more than Rs. 500 in most cases!

They should have laws for riding cycles, but the ban is not a good sign. Hand pulled rickshaws are a different matter though, but cycles shouldn't be banned, no matter what the situation is.

Ban cycles? WTF!! Why not ban the lousy autorickshaws instead? Banning them would make the roads a much safer and disciplined place.

I guess cycle manufacturer(s) did not pay the usual "maal" to the concerned official(s) in the department(s). This could be a result of it .

We always learn very late, when most of the countries in Europe support cycling and cycles, we are banning it.
Everyone will understand the simplicity and value of a cycle, once the city roads cannot grow and vehicles outnumber everything. That's when the real chaos set in.
In India only the vehicles are increasing and not roads, that's the worst.
Holland is the most cycle friendly of all, there cyclist has the preference and motorist comes second.
Of course we will learn it but like always, very late!!!

Cycle is the cleanest (environmentally) way of commuting and definitely our government is among the dirtiest.

Many poor who could not afford a motor on the two wheels or four wheels, it the only possible way for them to commute a little faster and cheaper and our government definitely is very poor not only in making decisions and planning but also on the ground of morality. Writing anything else would only add to the frustration.

This country has highest numbers of morons. I am just fed up with this country! After recently taking up cycling, I have found out that it's an activity which is looked down upon!!! So shocking! In my childhood days, we (me and a bunch of my friends) would cycle inside the Jahapanah Forest area which is a Ridge. Now, after 20 years later what I have rudely found out that DDA, which is responsible for the upkeep of the area, has put up a list of prohibitory activities which includes cycling!!!! Beat that!! And I know why they have done it. The path inside the ridge used to be a short cut for connecting "lesser privileged" areas in South Delhi with "more privileged" areas like Alaknanada, GKII, CR Parks. Now, people from these so called "more privileged" areas go for a jogging and morning walk in these areas and they find it intrusive because of the people from the lesser privileged areas. So, these morons with the help of DDA came up with this BOGUS, CRAPPY diktat. I wrote to a host of DDA officials including the Lt. Governor but as expected, not a single reply from anyone!

Today morning, after completing my usual round of 4-5 kms , I went inside a park to do some cycling on the track. I wasn't speeding and would wait for people to give me way and not pester them with the bike's bell. I was completely trying to be as polite as one can be. Also, I was using half of the track as for the rest, I was doing the cycling on the ground itself as it has overgrown grass and has some elevation which offers resistance while cycling. I was stopped by two aged morons giving me free advice (Bong Aged Morons). I also gave them an earful and asked them why there is so much of bias against cycling??? Am I suppose to ride on road fearful of my life as every other vehicles zooms past inches away from me instead of enjoying my passion???
