Its a DOHC, right? So, the pistons should traditionally take alternative TDC and BDC positions.Originally posted by Ri$hi View PostGot a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Isn't that supposed to be the correct way? If both pistons take TDC/BDC position simultaneously, there would be significantly higher vibes felt by the rider,Originally posted by Divya Sharan View PostIts a DOHC, right? That's what I'm saying! I guess it should be this (traditional) way only. Yamaha's cross-plane crankshaft has actually created more confusion than anything else.Originally posted by bbsrailfan View PostIsn't that supposed to be the correct way? We all expect something radical from all multi cyl. engines now. He he.Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

In a V twin, pistons take almost simultaneous tdc/bdc I guess (not sure if all v-twins work like this). Obviously, the cycles will be different. The best things in life are dangerous: Motorcycles and Women

This is a parallel twin bro. But, I still don't understand how can both pistons have simultaneous TDC/BDC operation!Originally posted by raging_bull View Post@bbsrailfan

Re: Suzuki Inazuma GW250 India Launch in January 2014: xBhp News
There are bikes with 360 degree crankshaft where both the pistons reach TDC and BTC at the same time. Honda CD200 roadmaster is one among them, the daddy of our very own HH cd100. There are also 270 degree crackshaft parallel twin four stroke bikes from the Triumph stables. What has SOHC/DOHC got to do with the pistons reaching the TDC at the same time or alternatively. Please share Your knowledge.Originally posted by Divya Sharan View PostThis is a parallel twin bro. But, I still don't understand how can both pistons have simultaneous TDC/BDC operation!

PS: suzuki gw250 is SOHC and not DOHC.

I will hopefully be able to clear your concernOriginally posted by Divya Sharan View PostThis is a parallel twin bro. But, I still don't understand how can both pistons have simultaneous TDC/BDC operation!

. In simple terms, TDC is the highest position that a piston can reach and BDC is the lowest position. Both pistons move upwards and downwards but they're in different cycles. I mean when going upwards, one piston will be in the compression cycle and the other will be in exhaust cycle. Clear? (assuming that this was your concern).
In inline 2 engines pistons take tdc/bdc simultaneously, if what I read is correct. And I think the pistons are in the same cycle too.
My knowledge about single and twin cylinder engines is VERY limited. Experts please correct me if there are any mistakes.Last edited by raging_bull; 12-20-2013, 03:36 PM.The best things in life are dangerous: Motorcycles and Women

Hmm, that explains it. Lets see what the actual cycles are. Suzuki would've documented it.Originally posted by raging_bull View PostI will hopefully be able to clear your concern

Sorry. Yes its SOHC.Originally posted by Ri$hi View PostThere are bikes with 360 degree crankshaft where both the pistons reach TDC and BTC at the same time. I got this from wikipedia which was the source of my post - A double overhead camshaft (DOHC) valvetrain layout (also known as 'dual overhead camshaft') is characterised by two camshafts located within the cylinder head, one operating the intake valves and one operating the exhaust valves.Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Re: Suzuki Inazuma GW250 India Launch in January 2014: xBhp News
Generally a twin parallal cylinder configuration uses 3 types of firing angle.
360 degrees: both pistons rise and fall at the same time. This configuration simplifies ignition and fuling systems but is prone to viberations. Old british twins are a good example of this. This set up generally employs a balancer shaft to counter vibes. On carburated engines this was used as a cost saving measure as both cylinders can be fed through a single carb and both cylinder can share the same timing mecanism.
180 degrees: pistons rise and falls alternatively. Separate fuling and more complex ignition required due to alternate firing order. Revs faster than a 360 degree set up. Thus produces more power. However requires separate fuling for both cylinders as well as separate timing mecanisms.
270 degrees: emulates a v twin firing order and vibes a lot. Sounds and feels like v twin as well.
Dohc can work with any type of firing order.

OT:- the cd 200 roadmaster shares very little with the hh cd100 apart from some design ques and may be brakes.Originally posted by Ri$hi View PostHonda CD200 roadmaster is one among them, the daddy of our very own HH cd100.

OT-- Yup the roadmaster was a twin I presume so even if the individual cylinder cc may look same but they are entirely different in respect to other functionality of the engineOriginally posted by Bibhu View PostOT:- the cd 200 roadmaster shares very little with the hh cd100 apart from some design ques and may be brakes.

So doesn't an inline twin work as the below image suggests?

That's an opposed piston engine I guess. No cylinder head.
And two pistons in a cylinder!Last edited by raging_bull; 12-20-2013, 09:24 PM.The best things in life are dangerous: Motorcycles and Women
