• Hero Moto Developing 250cc Sports Bike: xBhp News

    Source : ET

Almost two years after breaking up withHonda and with the erstwhile Japanese partner now fast and furiously on its trail, Hero MotoCorp is pulling out all stops towards unveiling its first indigenously-developed motorcycle - an all-new 250cc sports bike - at the next Auto Expo in 2014.

The motorcycle is being developed in collaboration with Hero Moto's American technology partner Erik Buell Racing (EBR), two persons involved with this closely-guarded project who did not want to be named told ET.

One of those persons added: "Hero is determined to showcase to the world its capability and competence in bringing world-class products with superior technology on its own in quick time. It is currently working on several models ranging from low-engine displacement to higher-powered motorcycles and scooters. However, the first bike on a new platform to hit the market will be a 250cc motorcycle."

A group of young and highly-skilled engineers from Hero Moto's R&D centres in Gurgaon and Dharuherahave been stationed at the EBR centre at East Troy inWisconsin, US for the past several months, and are working very closely with EBR engineers on this project, the persons close to the project said. The high-powered 250cc bike with cutting-edge technology and next-generation styling has been jointly conceptualized, designed and developed by Hero and EBR engineers.

"While the initial development is being done at the EBR centre, the complete development and manufacturing of the bike will be done at Hero's plants in India," said a source.

Hero MD & CEO Pawan Munjal is personally monitoring the progress of the project. The company has set a deadline of the Auto Expo to be held in Greater Noida in February 2014 to showcase the bike, with mass production likely to commence later during that year.

"This bike is being developed for the domestic market as well as for customers in global markets that Hero Moto plans to enter as part of its ambitious international business plan," said one of the persons close to the project.

ET could not reach Munjal for his comment as he was travelling overseas. A Hero MotoCorp spokesperson declined to comment on the development plans. In response to a questionnaire e-mailed to him, he said: "We do not wish to comment on speculations regarding our future line-up of products. We have already stated in recent past that we will be launching our own products in calendar year 2013. We shall be in a position to talk about specific models closer to the time of their launch."

250cc segment is getting crowded really fast. Wonder if its going to be a single cylinder or a twin. Feb is not far away. With Hero I assume the price should be a killer at the same time I hope to see it filled with some good tech.

The awkward moment when HERO gets a 250cc bike launched within 3 years of split with HONDA and YAMAHA is just concentrating on scooters

PS please take it lightly and now dont start brand bashing...

Does EBR have any bike below the litre mark segment in their portfolio yet?

                      Came across this...

We heard the rumours before, and although this new information is not official, its the closest that it can get to one. Hero MotoCorp in association with Eric Buell is currently working on a 250cc sport oriented motorcycle that the company aims to unveil at the 2014 Auto Expo in New Delhi. Work on the motorcycle is currently going on at full swing at the Eric Buell R&D centre in the US with both engineers from Hero and EBR jointly working on the cause.

Now EBR already has its reputation set in the racing arena and the tie up with Hero MotoCorp only enhances the possibility of this motorcycle to be quite an exciting one. The growing demand for an economical yet decently powerful motorcycles is not just in India and is in-fact a strong one all over the world. The 250cc motorcycle is furthermore important for Hero as they need to prove to the market that they can produce exciting and beautiful motorcycles on their own. The success of this motorcycle is also one that will establish the brand name EBR in India and also will help EBR remain competitive in its international markets.

Although the bike is designed at the EBR R&D centre abroad, it will be completely manufactured in India. Now to be honest we are really happy to hear it is a joint development by EBR and Hero because that rules out the possibility of it being just a big bore Karizma but more importantly we sure do hope that this new Hero 250 does not take design cues from the same.

Where is the rear seat? The bike shown above looks like a 1000cc & not 250cc bike..

I too agree; 250 might be just an overkill for the kind of looks it gives. But again the question is...Hero Moto & 1000CC...

Edit - Just realized, it could be due to Eric-Buell partnership

With the kind of emphasis being given to the 200 - 250cc range by the motorcycle companies combined with the Indian consumer lapping it up fast, it seems that the new 'engine displacement standard' is slowly shifting from 150 cc to this range! Good for us though, we are getting more choices to be spoilt for.
                            Enjoy! \m/
