It is a function of the layout of the motor, the number of cylinders and the firing order.
Singles, twins, triples, and fours all sound different. Then there is the difference between an inline and a V motor. The crossplane R1 has an uneven firing order and so sounds different from all the other inline 4's.
A Harley sounds different from a Ducati because the Harley is a 60 degree V-twin where the Duc is a 90 degree V-twin. A Ninja 250 is a parallel twin and so sounds completely different still.

Why not any company make a parallel or V-twin which can give us a inline four sound, if not inline four than I can manage with Inline three also
