Ducati unveiled the very first airbag equipped motorcycle riding suit, which is integrated into the workings of the motorcycle. The Ducati Multistrada comes equipped with extra sensors and an extra ECU as well. The Riding jackets with the airbags and riding vests with airbags are separate and manufactured by Dainese. The two companies have come together to take motorcycling safety to a whole new level.

Dainese for some time has been selling racing suits with integrated airbags. Some even supporting Google Earth! Now the renowned motorcycle gear manufacturer has tied up the Bologna factory to integrate it into the electronics of the motorcycle.

    How does this work?

The Multistrada does not just have the electronic trickery hidden away in the form of sensors etc. It also informs the rider about the condition of the airbag on the motorcycle instrument cluster. It warns the rider if there is a malfunction with the airbag.

This version of the Multistrada will cost 655 GBP (Rs 67000/-) more than the MS S Touring model. While the Dainese jacket to accompany this motorcycle will cost an estimated 1400 Euros.

The Honda Goldwing also features airbags, but the airbags are placed in the motorcycle unlike on the riding gear of the biker as in the MTS.

Will the future see these safety features trickle down to lower end motorcycles as well?

I wonder if bikes can ever become too safe, that the charm of riding motorcycles wares off? I truly wonder.

No body likes to be cut and bruised Monk. Protection is welcome. The word 'charm' is usually associated with the big cruisers(REs) in India which are big thumpers, but todays superbikes which can clock 250+ in the drop of a hat, need these top of the shelf protection equipment.

And no matter what you do, bikes would always be more dangerous than cars. The rider wearing an airbag jacket can survive the impact unscathed but may then be crushed by an oncoming truck. So chill, you'll still have a greater probability of dying than the average cager:P
