The only time a single speed and geared bike will have the same gear ratio is when the number of teeth on the front sprocket and rear sprocket are the same for the two bikes.

All geared bikes do not have the same sprocket configuration. It varies from bike to bike. So a 2.5 in one bike will not be the same as 2.5 in another bike.

So to answer your question, you will have to count the number of teeth on both the front and rear of your geared bike and compare it with the single speeds to know which gear combination gives the same ratio.
Ok, thank you for the useful information.

A Flip Flop is both of the above. Made possible by the rear hub having two sprockets. One side of the hub has a fixed gear, the other has a free wheel. To convert the Fixie into a single speed, one needs to 'flip' the hub. Thus the name 'Flip Flop'.

I hope Wikipedia has done a decent enough job of explaining what is what
thanks for the link, may be i was searching the wrong "keyword".

even after reading those wiki pages, i failed to appreciate any real benefit of fixed speed cycle.

Well the only real benefit of a fixie is - INSANE amounts of fun
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

You can also reverse the bike by pedalling reverse . However, you better have strong legs because you cannot stop pedalling. As long as the bike is on the move, you have to pedal.

Yes that is another reason why people ride fixies, helps build muscle as you are forced to pedal continuously whether uphill or downhill. Though it is a contentious manner of exercise as your knees take a bad beating on the climbs.

There;s a certain amount of skill and endurance level you need to have before riding a fixies. Certainly not for everyone.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Any review of this bike guys?

Going by looks, price 12k in retails sound decent to me. I am thinking for getting one, but Firefox has bad reputation for quality.

Currently we have 'PureFix' sold by BOTS which is priced at 24k, while Poloygon Zenith FX goes for some 33k. We had likes of 'Mongoose Maurice' and 'Schwin Madison' which retailed for 18-20k, but they are not available now.

The Polygon Zenith does look gorgeous. Yesterday again had a look at the Flip Flop. Didn't ride it. Seems to be the expected quality at that price point, won't expect too much from it though.

There is a store in Delhi which i visit regularly, poor guy has the maurice for some time now. Hasn't been able to sell it. Fixies are not the most popular choices apparently!
