"There are more good people than bad people," she reasons. She arrived in Chennai from Bangalore on Wednesday and will leave the city on Friday morning on the trip touching Kolkata, New Delhi and Mumbai before getting back to Bangalore. "There are lot of news reporting rapes, molestation and murders. But India is not such an unsafe place. This trip is to prove that," she says.
In the past seven months Gupta had clocked 12,000km including a trip from Bangalore to Goa and back. Bored with her job as a facility manager in an MNC, she resigned and decided to go on a longer bike ride. Over the next 40 days, she will go through 20 cities including Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Dhanbad, Lucknow, Udaipur, Surat, Pune and Hubli.
"In each of the cities I will be talking to college students. There is a lot of interest generated over my Facebook page," Gupta says.
Once Gupta has a detailed itinerary for her trip but says she take it as it goes. "I feel safe in this country and do not expect any issues. I have been told that the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border and the Bhubaneswar-Kolkata stretch are a bit sensitive. The roads are empty for long stretches and I have to be careful. It's on the back of my mind, but I am not scared," she says.
Her bike is fitted with a GPS device and can be tracked by her friends. And there is an SOS button that would alert them if she needs help. "I don't think I'll ever need to use it. I have also gone through training on basics on bike repairs like fixing flat tyres and replacing accelerator and clutch cables," she says.
For all her toughness, Gupta carries in her backpack a soft toy she calls Goldie. "I call him Goldie because we will be riding along the golden quadrilateral," she says.
