Re: Government to make ABS mandatory on motorcycles and scooters in India
Ours is a government of hypocrisy as are our people. Why do you think they are willing to do changes like BS-4 and ABS because it costs them nothing and hurts none of their arrangements. So is with ABS, all they have to do is legislate and leave it to consumers and manufacturers to fight it out. The end result is-Originally posted by TheArcher84 View PostIf we start picking one after the other, we'll end up picking the government itself who is running all the show outside..from roads to toll booth
We have BS-4 for cars but no such thing for buses and trucks and other transport vehicles, heck we even cannot make a rule to stop 20+ years old creaking trucks/LMVs from plying on our roads spewing charcoal smoke. We will have ABS for bikes but our autos and other vehicles will keep running as they please.
So if I may ask, what problem are they trying to solve? Do they want to look fashionable and current by having it in out rule books? I'm all for ABS and rest but if it really addresses a specific problem. There are more things actually begging their attention than ABS for bikes.

Re: Government to make ABS mandatory on motorcycles and scooters in India
To all ABS haters here, how many times you've had a goat, cow, dog, chicken, duck, cat, children, drunks, dumb hesitating ladies, come in front of your bike all of a sudden and how many times you've had to brake all of a sudden because the tuk tuk in front of you braked hard cause he saw a passenger? Those moments could have been your last ones in this world if you had just pulled the brake lever a tad bit more being panicked.
Now think, how ABS would take that stress out of your mind. Still there is a need to be vigilant on the road, but the assurance of safety (or safety is just an illusion) surely helps. Ain't that why we all have automobile insurance?
Before somebody goes out saying I'm the cream of the crop (I'm not and I have a government issued certificate to prove that
) and I need to think of the 100cc commuters and how the price increase would affect them, I'd like to assure you that I'm by no means above those splendor, CD100 guys, in fact I'm below them; I cannot even afford commuter bike, but I understand the importance of road safety and would love to see a change in Indian traffic conditions and road manners.
With mass productions, the price of ABS systems would be lowered, already I read here that Bosch has developed a FI system that costs almost the same a carburetor and there are single channel ABS modules by some manufacturers that would be quite affordable.
If any of you guys are worried that you would not be able to drift or pop wheelies or perform stoppies with ABS equipped bikes, I'd like to mention that there is a button (Like on the RTR 180 ABS) or other mechanism (In KTM Dukes, you need to remove a fuse AFAIK) to disable ABS system on bikes, if you are skilled enough or stupid enough to do so.I am back!

Re: Government to make ABS mandatory on motorcycles and scooters in India
ABS or no ABS is not the topic being discussed here. So why are you gents counting your chickens before the eggs get laid.
Even if the government gets around to mandating ABS in India, all bikes sold or produced before passing of legislation will be given a free pass as once sold they become owners responsibility.
And vehicles older than 10 years will get a free pass too as they are money wise not worth the effort. As far as the 100cc market is concerned, we see 100-110cc bikes with front disc brakes and some 150or higher cc bikes with front and rear disc brakes. These are the same disc brakes which were unheard of about 10years ago. People swore by their drum brakes and dismissed disk brakes as fancy stuff. Now however they are common and one cannot live without it.
The ABS and combo braking will see the same fate. Trust me.
And for those who swear by ABS, guys its safe I agree but its not idiot proof. So those who fell flat on their faces off their bikes before will still fall flat on their faces. All this stuff is is mental satisfaction but its no substitute for real skill.
