  • Bike Ambulance

Bangalore is about to start a Ambulance on bike service shortly owing to the congested city roads which make it almost impossible for an ambulance to arrive in time. Thhe bike ambulance is supposed to address this problem and help to make ambulance service available on time for any road side emergencies.
And this service is retrofitted on the new D390! yes the new Dukes.

Check this video for the kind of work done on D390 to make it take a patient as pilliion, looks real neat- TWA | M2M Applications pvt ltd
I am hoping this will be a hit.

      Re: Bike Ambulance

This is very innovative. 2 wheels are always quicker than 4 wheels in Indian traffic. However I dont think there is any law that allows a motorcycle to be used as a life saving vehicle. For instance, for a vehicle to be assigned as an Ambulance legally, it MUST have a bed and oxygen cylinder as standard fittings as bare minimum life support instruments.

But the idea is very noble and must be encouraged and practised throughout India.

        Re: Bike Ambulance

An accident victim would feel much safer and would go through less stress inside a car/van ambulance than this motorcycle
I am no doctor but what if the victim has a broken back and cannot sit,how will such victims be given medical aid/transportation to the hospital???
Also motorcycle is not safe for such things.

The videos do not show how the victim is put on the stretcher.Dedicated lanes for emergency vehicles is the best

          Re: Bike Ambulance

Yes, I agree for some serious cases there is no alternative to a proper ambulance but there are many others which involve a fracture and such, which can make use of this service.
It might not meet the definition of ambulance per se but it will help in many cases which don't require the patient to lie down and he/she is conscious. The time taken to reach the person is still very useful part of any emergency care.

Its nice innovation that motorcycle can be used to carry patient, but there are many aspect which needs to check on real world.

PS: Why they selected duke 390, a bikes with more space on back would be better

              Re: Bike Ambulance

This very innovation has existed from the time of the first world war when injured soldiers would be brought to the field hospitals using bikes fitted with special sidecars. These were used to reach places that were inaccessible by cars and trucks and on fobs.
So it surprises me as to why no one saw its usefulness in the cities as a quick response option. Really commendable effort by Bangalore. Hats of to Karnataka.

here they dont have a side car attached sir, with the side car attached it would not be manouverable in the traffic. This is useful only in not so serious accidents.

                  Re: Bike Ambulance

I am sorry, but transporting a patient (especially road accident cases) that way doesn't seem to be the right thing to do (did they get inspiration from '3 idiots'?)
Two wheeler ambulances, i think are used in the UK but they are only a more quicker way to get the first response team on site to provide first aid/basic life saving techniques while the main ambulance makes its way to the location of the accident to transport the victim.

Whoa...that's some serious mods done to the D390. But , yeah, the pressure will be more on the driver to get him in one piece . Since he is the only one to attend.

Fun aside, if the bike ambulance could do what it is meant for then it will be a success.

                            Re: Bike Ambulance

                            Such a nice concept!

Agree that legally and practically it might not meet the criteria to be called an 'ambulance'. However, it can effectively be used as the fastest mode of transport of first responders and EMTs who can reach the accident spot and attend the victim while the ambulances reaches there. They can also carry people to the hospital who are not severely injured but need medical attention to prevent their injuries from worsening.

In developed countries, it is mandatory to put the victims on the stretcher and also to immobilize them if the EMTs suspect an injury to the spine or a fracture in any of the bones. But things are different here. We do not have proper ambulances and trained technicians in place first of all in most of the cities and even if it is there, a lot of precious time is lost due to traffic in reaching the road accident victims.

So kudos to 'the person' who came up with the idea and dedicated his time and other resources to make it a reality. It is an excellent idea that should be adopted by authorities; however, it definitely cannot be a substitute for a proper ambulance. Its role will be a limited but (potentially) very effective one.

p.s.: The xBhpians will be really proud to know the person who is behind this idea. I so badly want to reveal his name, but would love if he comes here and announces it himself
