The TVS-BMW partnership which had been inked in 2013 is closer to fruition with the confirmation of a single cylinder engine being developed for the two partners. The engine will be below 500cc, but the exact specifications have not been revealed. What we do know is that this single cylinder engine will be developed completely by BMW, only the production will be done in the state of the art facilities of TVS. The engine will be used in both TVS and BMW motorcycles. Bikes being manufactured in India by TVS will have both BMW and TVS branding, depending on the model. The BMW bikes will be exported out of the country.
Currently the company is not looking at producing a twin-cylinder engine, though that is in the pipeline in the later years. BMW has a history of bulletproof quality and expectations are very high from the Indian manufacturer to live up to that quality. The good news is that the quality of the motorcycles is to be standardized and therefore the customer in India will have access to world class motorcycles at affordable costs.
