Re: ABS & CBS Mandatory On 2-Wheelers In India From April 2018
News Approved.
I just hope they set moderate or stringent standards.
I don't want to see a repeat of that toy called "Mechanical ABS" which just loosened the braking power, without any reference to the available grip.
Personally, I hate their enforcement of CBS though. Not everyone likes it and arguably its not always safe.
But its a good move. I hope we can see better products in future.---

Why Samarth bhai, What is the reason behind that. And also, how will they manage to install the ABS system in products like 220, N300,Z250 when the bikes are already in use.Originally posted by Samarth 619 View PostNot everyone likes it and arguably its not always safe.

Re: ABS & CBS Mandatory On 2-Wheelers In India From April 2018
I guess those sold before 2018 would ply on roads without any mechanical changes.. The ones sold after April 2018 needs to comply with the rule.
For CBS, the braking force distribution is not always as desired by the rider. Hence not so safe, as i feel.***Correct me if I am wrong :)

Re: ABS & CBS Mandatory On 2-Wheelers In India From April 2018
Though it seems like a welcome move, I hope, the govt. and ARAI will have strict guidelines for approval of ABS systems and manufacturers are forced to use good quality systems like Bosch for ABS systems. If we leave the implementation at manufacturers discretion, then I believe this move would be counter productive.
Also in Indian context how much of a difference can this move make? OK so I have ABS now, but if I am riding without helmet and with my entire extended family as pillion and my 2 yr old son on petrol tank, me and my family safe? Ooh I also like to ride on the wrong side of road most of the time, but any way I have C-ABS so I am safe.

The models launched after 2017 must have abs and the existing models should get that by 2018 not the one that are being ridden on roads

Re: ABS & CBS Mandatory On 2-Wheelers In India From April 2018
Most bikers don't like it, because they see their vehicles getting interestingly close to a video game kind of setup... i.e. it won't be involving anymore, if we have just one pedal/ lever for both brakes. Today, we deal with physics when we operate both brakes separately. We see the rear sliding sometimes, we see the front forks dive in sometimes, its fun that way.Originally posted by TheArcher84 View PostWhy Samarth bhai, What is the reason behind that.
In rare cases of CBS on drum brakes (like on Activa), there might be a rear skid even when you press the front brake, specially, if the rear one's made tight... And in such a case, the rider won't have an option at all. Let's hope it won't be the same with CBS on disc brakes.
ABS will have to be installed in each and every product, by changing a small part of their production process. The good thing is that they have enough time. They will not touch existing bikes on the road, I am sure. Its only for new bikes. And also, how will they manage to install the ABS system in products like 220, N300,Z250 when the bikes are already in use.
The motorcycle owners will face the brunt of the increased price, most probably. But hey, this is progress. The dealer network will stop expanding if their margins go lower. The company has to show a balance sheet to stakeholders, and they can go for a little cost cutting only, not too drastic by any means though.Who would be bearing this cost...Should the individual bear it or the company who has to comply with the norms from the govt has to ??
A case in point for ABS pricing in India is the Apache RTR 180, whose 2 variants (ABS vs non ABS) were placed apart by an approx Rs. 10000 difference.
We will still not see that much of an increase, when there'll be economies of scale (if all manufacturers produce motorcycles with ABS, the demand for ABS will rise up, and their mass production will become regular and cheaper. Plus, options will be more).
Anyways, 2017 is still far, as of now.

Re: ABS & CBS Mandatory On 2-Wheelers In India From April 2018
This CBS thing is something i wouldn't want on my motorcycle. If it is implemented, i hope it can be disabled or junked. The last thing i would want is for my braking to be controlled by someone else. I can see the road conditions and the varying available traction, accordingly i can change the amount of input i give to either brake.
Even ABS i would rather not have on my small capacity bike!Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!
Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Re: ABS & CBS Mandatory On 2-Wheelers In India From April 2018
AFAIK the CBS only works when the rear brakes are applied. The front remains independent since most riders only use the front brake even though optimum straight line braking requires both front and rear braking to reduce stopping distance. Even on the Activa afaik, the left rear brake lever activates the mechanical drum brake CBS by modulating the front brakes aswell. The front remains independent.
The sole point of a CBS is to reduce stopping distance by utilizing both front and rear brakes since applying rear brakes alone would take forever to stop the vehicle from decent speed.Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Re: ABS & CBS Mandatory On 2-Wheelers In India From April 2018
I think it's a move in the right direction. Even though we may be subject to cheaper and less effective solutions to bypass this law a discerning customer could infact opt for a working and effective solution even in the commuter and scooter segment. With ever skinnier tyres and more power at hand most commuter segment bikes are easily skiddable. Now if only traffic rules would be mandatory!
