Dr M C Misra, AIIMS director said,
Apart from this, AIIMS in collaboration with Monash University, Melbourne, is also doing a long-term research project in trauma systems. Under 'Australia India Trauma Systems' collaboration project, the apex trauma centre will try to develop a national trauma registry for the country.

    Dr Amit Gupta, AIIMS said:
"AIIMS is also planning to develop a rehabilitation prescription application, which can be downloaded on smartphones.
Often patients after treatment go back home and it is not possible for them to come back again for consultation. In that case, they will be given reminders through the application to follow certain exercises and our physiotherapists will keep on assessing their quality of life after say three months or nine months."

And what certification will it have? ISI?

And I thought roadside helmets are the best ventilated and cheapest and also have ISI "stickers"

When I read the title, I was like "meh. Another indian experiment, which will focus on low costs, and end up being a disaster, like the tata nano"

Then I read in the thread "Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia", and I cut my skepticism slightly. Still skeptical, though.

as long as that mentality persists we will never amount to anything. all that is required to gain trust of Indians is a foreign name, realities be damned.

tata nano is a disaster in marketing, not engineering.

If the helmets are good enough, there's competition for existing players. How good they are, will be known after a few reviews!

Re: AIIMS To Develop Low Cost Helmet for India

Unfortunately the test of effectiveness concerning helmets is an expensive one. I don't mean monetarily. I will go with something DoT and SNELL certified thank you.

Having said that, if a better helmet can be provided at a lower cost, it is better done than not.

And in an aside, I have been thinking about the compulsory helmet laws in India. Why do they exist? Apart from being unenforced and very apparently unenforceable what purpose do they serve?

Now, climbing on a motorcycle involves inherently more risk than any other form of land based motor transport. It is thus wise to wear protection, at least for the head, so if you do crash, you will only be physically f***ed up and not, god forbid, a vegetable. This means your brain is fully aware and capable of lamenting your plight for the rest of your miserable life.

But if you are the sort to hang your helmet in the crook of your elbow, only to wear it when there appear to be cops in the distance, while your bike is still moving, then maybe you deserve to be removed from the gene pool. Who better to do it than yourself? I thus submit that the compulsory helmet laws should be abolished and everyone should be allowed to ride in their VIP Frenchies if they damn well want. Its a freedom issue!

If there needs to be a law, maybe it should be that helmets and possibly other protection should be compulsory for the pillion, should you wish to carry one. Because, while you are free to write yourself off at any time, taking responsibility for another life is a different matter altogether. Maybe bike manufacturers can put a pressure sensor in the pillion seat that will limit the speed of the machine............

              Ah, I could rant on....................

                  Some mahapurush once said:-

Cheap and Reliable is not fast.
Cheap and Fast is not reliable.
Fast and Reliable is not cheap.

Putting it away from a motorcycle context, you can replace "fast" with "performing", and the rule will still stand for most things, if not all.

Coming to this helmet, it will be cheap and performing (ventilation), so will it be reliable in terms of crash resistance? Can you rely on it?

Anyhow, bottom line is, it may not be for me or hardcore bikers, but as long as it motivates non wearers to wear it, I would welcome the move anyhow... I mean, it can't be all that bad for the 40 kmph crowd, isn't it?
They could have something like a sort of cage to ensure ventilation...

Members here or people elsewhere can continue to bring down this motive by their skeptical comments though. If people who doesnt wear the helmets even after imposing any kind of rule, you cant change them. But any common man who once becomes afraid that he might loose his life becoause he doesnt have a lid on his head, will definitely buy good products or try to adhere to the rule.

Its just time people here and elsewhere educate themselves and not throw such negative comments. Rather welcome it. Create awareness about it. There a n number of rides conducted for racism and other things...why dont people who rant about this "low-quality" go on ride to create awareness rather than for a pleasure ride of his own.

Archer, you could not be more right. I have always evangelized the need for all kinds of protective gear because I have crashed and spent time comatose in a hospital particularly because I wasn't wearing my helmet. But I have found and you will also find that ignorance is often willful. Most people who buy the Rs.250 roadside helmets, keep them purely to avoid the fines from their traffic thulla. They will probably not buy a Rs.750-1000 higher quality helmet because it will protect them better. Deep down inside, we all believe we are better riders/drivers than we actually are.

Having said that, if there is such a ride, count me in.

I wish the GTGs which are planned for meeting one-other can be turned into such awareness campaign. People dont just follow when you tell them first time. Either they are ignorant or too heavy-headed to hear others opinion.

If we talk about safety and other aspects, spreading this awareness through a ride from xBhp would be an ideal start. Its upto others as well to pool in their opinion in the respective GTG thread and not rant here.

Going a little OT here. We would like to see every biker on the road with ATGATT. But thats not going to happen soon. Atleast a basic education to them about Helmet is not going to degrade us by any means. We may be seen as stupid to this societey, but if such awareness campaign goes on in all the cities for quite a while, people and even Traffic police will encourage this.
