  • World's most powerful Single improves itself: 2016 KTM Duke 690 & 690R revealed.

    2016 KTM Duke 690 & 690R revealed.

Both the Duke 690 and 690 R are motivated by a 690cc single-cylinder motor. For 2016, the engine gains a new cylinder head, as well as upgraded intake and exhaust systems. The list of novelties also targets the piston, piston ring, connecting rod, as well as the crankshaft, while twin spark plugs with individual mapping complete the technical scenery.

This allows the engine to climb 1,000 rpm higher, but performance was not the only target here. Refinement was also on the agenda, so the unit gets a balancer shaftEuro IV compliant.
The 2016 Duke comes with three ride modes, Sport, Street and Rain, selectable by the updated left handlebar switch gear. A Bosch 9M+ switchable ABS will be standard but traction control will be an optional add-on. Electronic settings will be indicated on a new TFT display, the first for a KTM.

KTM has also targeted the rest of the Duke, working on the steering geometry to offer better stability and more precise cornering.

The Duke R now comes with an Akrapovic exhaust system, and together with the new graphics and LED blinkers, this is one of the few visual changes for 2016. Completing the tech package of the R is a fully adjustable WP suspension, along with a Brembo monoblock front caliper.

In terms of the electronics, the R receives all the features mentioned above, as well as a Supermoto riding mode.

NOTE: It is rumored that the Duke 690 will weigh around 150-155 kgs wet weight, with 11 litres fuel tank. But this can't be confirmed, because the press only recently gained info about the Duke 690's 2016 model..

Hope you are not saying this after the Bullet experience. I suppose it wont be as bad a Bullet. But might be there a little here and there.

How did they even manage single cylinder with 75ps.

Uber high compression ratios should do the trick

Yes this is after a bullet riding experience, if they vibrate and shake every bone of your body. I am sure this high CC single pot ktm will be a vibrator at a whole new level.

We all know, only upto a certain limit a single pot can subdue the vibrations no matter how good the balancer shaft is!!!

We also know how much buzzy the duke and rc 390 bikes are at higher rev range and at such a high power single pot, the compression ratio will touch the stratosphere, if not the moon.

The only question which comes to my mind is why can't they go for a v-twin or parallel twin setup and bajaj has already localised the duke and RC brothers how hard can it be to build a v-twin or parallel twin

                    Cheers,

RoyalJordanian got the 690 as a loan bike, and he described it as "horrible" "worst bike I've ever ridden" "Diesel Tractor" 'something about shit build quality' and so many other demeaning words that I lost count.

                          Guys,

Of late, Xbhp is in the habit of bashing un-released bikes, isn't it? Don't you guys think so?

I hope you didn't miss the Bore(+) & Stroke(-) change. and the subsequent valve/ cylinder changes, which explains why the bike makes more power. Its not necessarily high compression ratio.

Anyways, everything from A to Z can have a negative and positive aspect, depending on our viewpoint. I can list 5 negatives in your (any) dream motorcycle, but that would make me negative instead.

A positive person will not dismiss the power to weight ratio, the initial cost, the flickability, the city advantage, the mileage, the service bills, the repair-ability, the modifiability, the low end torque (maybe), etc, etc.
Modifiability as in, what are the chances of modifying an inline 4 bike into a dirt bike? Grim, right? But a single cylinder can be made almost anything.

Up there, Ducati Panigale 1290 and Superduke 1290R are giving the litres a run for their money. These bikes are the new muscle-bikes, touching a 200 kmph speed in around 7-8 seconds. They match power to weight of the supersports, with notably more torque down there too.
Down here, Duke and RC 390 have proven what they had to prove, and we see them much more, than the so called "refined" stuff.

Little demerits are ok and we've also had smooth singles too like Karizma, R15, etc so we may wish to wait before we speculate.

We may not like it, but less cylinders are here to stay and make a solid statement while they're at it. Sometimes less is more.

                            Loved that last line.

I personally, like many others, would love to ride a single or maybe a 'V'twin that vibrates, farts & curses rather than riding a 4 cylinder blender on two wheels.
