  • All-new Indian Springfield launched at Rs. 30.6 lakh

Polaris India has launched the all-new 2016 Springfield, priced at Rs 30.6 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The official bookings for the new touring motorcycle have already commenced and deliveries will begin from August onwards.

Named after the company's headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts, this performance cruiser features a trunk-compatible chassis for higher loading capacity. The tourer sports a bespoke quick-release windshield, and gets other standard features such as remote locking hard bags, adjustable passenger floorboards, leather seating, anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring and cruise control.

Measuring 2,583mm in length, 990mm in width, 1,442mm in height, and 1,701mm between the axles, the Springfield tips the scales at 388kg. The 20.8-litre fuel tank sits atop a 1,811cc V-twin engine that produces a healthy 138.9Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Suspension duties are handled by telescopic forks up front and an air adjustable rear mono-shock.

Standard front and rear highway bars allow mounting of accessories and offer valuable protection from tip-overs. The brakes up front consist of dual 300mm rotors clamped down by four-piston callipers, while the rear gets a single 300mm rotor and two-piston calliper setup.

Steve Menneto, president of motorcycles for Polaris Industries, said: "The new Indian Springfield wasn't designed to fill a space in our line-up; it was built to fill a space in the hearts of riders who value the rich heritage and fine craftsmanship of Indian Motorcycle, and who want both a pure touring bike and a sleek urban cruiser."

Besides the Springfield, the Indian Motorcycle range for the market here includes the Chief Classic, Chief Vintage, Chieftain, Chief Dark Horse, Scout and Roadmaster.

The motorcycles retail via showrooms located in Gurgaon, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

I guess it is unfair to compare it to an auto which can easily carry twice as many people, an extra wheel for better stability and far better wind and rain protection.

Compared to Indian Scout, what are the upsides and downs of Indian Springfield?

The upside is the shiny chromey bits. The downside is the black rubbery bits. This is usually true of all motorbikes.

                        Indian Scout:
Max power - 100 hp (RPM not disclosed)
                        Max torque - 97.7 Nm @ 5900 RPM

                        Indian Springfield:
                        Max torque - 161.6 Nm @ 3000 RPM
                        Max power - Not disclosed.

But if one uses the HP-torque formula (Google), one gets around 68 hp at 3000 revs. Assuming the bike even makes 100 Nm torque at 7000 revs, the bike may make close to 100 hp as peak power.
Lets wait for someone to actually provide the HP figures here, but I guess horse power would be on the same lines as the Scout.
