    STORY HIGHLIGHTS

    * Hero MotoCorp becomes the largest 125cc motorcycle manufacturer
    * Hero Glamour is the highest-selling 125cc bike for Feb-April 2016
    * Honda CB Shine's sales slump

You heard it right! Hero MotoCorp is now the top dog when it comes to the 125cc segment. The Indian motorcycle brand is the biggest two wheeler manufacturer in the country, but the 125cc crown always eluded it somehow. But, over the last three months, the Hero Glamour has been outselling the CB Shine by a fair margin. Therefore, the 125cc segment sales for Hero grew by a solid 33 per cent. In April 2016, it sold 109, 955 units of 125cc motorcycles which include the Glamour, Ignitor and the Super Splendor.

The Glamour is now the highest selling 125cc motorcycle in India. It sold 66,756 units in April 2016 as against 51,829 units in April last year. At the same time, the CB Shine sold 52,752 units in April 2016 compared to 73,291 units sold in April 2015. The sales of the CB Shine fell by 20,539 units when we compare the April 2015 and the April 2016 figures. Overall, the Glamour sold 679,147 units is FY 2016 as compared to 551,486 units in FY 2015, registering a growth of 23 per cent.

On the other hand, Honda's 125cc sales slumped from 74,532 units in April 2015 to 66,700 in April 2016, a decline in the sales by 10.5 per cent. Honda's 125cc portfolio includes the CB Shine and CB Shine SP. Although, not all is bad for Honda in India. They are the biggest gainers in the two-wheeler segment over the last one year.

The 110-125cc segment of motorcycles saw a growth of 10 per cent despite the fact that the segments directly above and below it saw their sales slump. This segment sold 1,790,896 units in FY 2016 as compared to 1, 623,670 units in FY 2015. This definitely indicates that the buying patterns in the commuter motorcycle segment are changing. An efficient motorcycle with a hint of premiumness is what the people are looking at and the 125cc segment is the one catering to the demand.

      Interesting! Very interesting!

May or may not be OT:
Collating various things happening in our country - Delhi bans >2L diesel, Kerala joins too. So no more big diesels. Private vehicles only, of course!
This means - death of enthusiast/bad boy diesels.

Enthusiast/bad boy petrol vehicles are rarely bought and they're very costly. They're already a dying trend.
Same for SBKs. They're out of reach of most people and rightly so!

Now, 125cc bikes provide premiumness as per the above article. So, 125cc segment is the new 150! Look at the prices today. 125 is what 150s were 5 years ago and the same story repeats in higher segments. A non ABS CBR 250R costs almost 2L now. Specifications be damned. Engines are getting smaller. Race to mileage figures aren't getting over with the sleuth of mopeds lined up for sale!

There is only one solution to this - throw Hero and Maruti out of the country! No seriously!!!

Well.. I believe they used the term PREMIUMNESS keeping in mind that the 125cc bikes offer more premium over the 100cc bikes and mopeds

You are dreaming divya. This country runs on blind perception. "Hero bikes are good." This perception wont change despite having other potent options in every segment. So its useless to ponder over these moot issues.

Exactly my point. That's why I had mentioned Maruti and Hero. I'm sure they lobby hard to get these idiotic decisions/products (like banning >2L diesels and claiming their 1.3L diesel offers a hybrid system which deserves a tax waiver - oh please! and then Hero claims to have some ATFT something of the sort tech and iSmart having a notchy start-stop tech) launched and sold in the market.

Their ads are hilarious and stupid at the same time. But as long as people buy these unsafe contraptions, who are these automotive giants to care?

EDIT - We're venturing too much (or at least I'm) outside the realm of xBhp - i.e, 2 wheelers. We should discuss this offline.

Bajaj needs to learn a lesson or two from the Glamor's book. This bike has not been promoted at all by Hero and yet a decade later its launch, it takes the crown from Honda Shine of being the No.1 125cc bike. Glamor did not have promotions, was not a hotseller when launched, and its persistence is remarkable. So Bajaj, the next time you phase out a bike, look at Glamor.

                    Bajaj XCD: 2009-10

The reason why glamour is at top is because of the product.

While shine has got lots of complaints, glamour is steadily getting better.

                          Shine has most common complains:-
                          1. Engine smoking at 25-30k. Sometimes earlier.
                          2. Chain kit. Shine eats chain kit as quick as 10k kms.
                          3. Price has gone higher than what's its worth.
                          4. Shorter geared. Has torque at high rpm. So first and second gear is extremely short geared.

While glamour has a much longer lasting engine and chain kit.

It is a two wheeled bolero.

Its makes maximum torque at 4000 rpm. 11 nm @ 4000 rpm.

So riding it is stress free and no need of gear changes. Pulls from 20-100 in fourth.

                          Bike is lot smoother.

Runs at any speed stress free. On highways it will be cruising at 80 & still sounding relaxed.

Looks decent and is very comfortable.

And mileage is consistently 65 kpl.

And it employs direct slide carb to cv carb of shine. So throttle response feel direct.

Its the product which has changed the market.

And here I thought, glamour is going to be discontinued with so many alternative options from other bike manufacturers. I guess it's not going away anytime soon.
