  • Mahindra likely to shift focus to premium bikes to drive its two-wheeler biz

Since its (MOJO) launch, the single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 295cc Mojo has seen cumulative sales of over 500 units until March 2016.

Mahindra Two Wheelers (MTWL), the loss-making two-wheeler arm of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), may see a shift in its focus to premium motorcycles to drive its business in the future. It can be recalled that while talking to Autocar Professional The single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 295cc Mojo managed to garner cumulative sales of more than 500 units until March 2016 besides fetching decent reviews from the industry and customers. Experts say that while the Mojo could be a good touring option among other models in its price range, the model has been successful in terms of creating the buzz and getting potential customers talk about it.According to market analysts, while MTWL may roll out variants of an existing platform to drive business under its two-wheeler umbrella, the company may not commercially launch an entirely new product platform during the ongoing fiscal.

Re: Mahindra likely to shift focus to premium bikes to drive its two-wheeler biz

On the topic of Mahindra taking 5/6 years to launch the Mojo - I was talking to some Mahindra personnel at the time of the first ride to Chikmagalur. They said that it was showcased back in 2010 but then the project was put on hold. Work was restarted on the project in 2012/2013 and released in 2015.
So this is one reason that leads me to believe that future products may not take as long to make it to production.

There's another reason - the hardest part to get right is the engine and I think they have got it spot on - it is very smooth, makes decent power and seems to be reliable looking at reports across all owners thus far. Now to plonk that engine into a twin spar frame for a faired racer or creating an adventure version as showcased during the Auto expo should *hopefully* not take 2-3 years, if the intent to launch these products is there in the first place.

^^ Yes that is true, the team which started the design in 2010 and the team which took it over it 2013 was not the same.

But unfortunately, the Mojo will have to live with the tag that it took 5 years in the making and people will continue to ridicule it. Without giving credit to the fact that Mahindra got their first motorcycle so bloody right!

Yet got the marketing wrong by not launching it pan-India. This selective showroom strategy will make sure that the bike wont sell in numbers.

^^you are absolutely correct they had very wrong strategy and in 2015 showrooms were ready to launch in PAN India and if they had, sales numbers would have been better.
They have Mahindra finance and can make more attractive sweet deal for mojo buyer such as giving low finance rate, like VW or Nissan giving 5+% interest rate for polo or terano buyers.

Maybe. Maybe not. How often you see people cribbing about terrible service after buying a 'premium' bike?

Mahindra didn't have the infrastructure to be able to launch the bike in too many cities. There are a tiny company still. The focus was to sell the bike to as many people as they could provide satisfactory ASS (no pun intended ) Go through the ownership threads of the R3, TNT 300 and Mojo.

But only time will tell, whether they marketing strategy was right or wrong

I am not sure about their marketing strategy. However, what I am sure of is they have a bang on product in their hand which can do wonders with just the dress changed...

Agree completely. There is no point in launching the Mojo in a Tier II or Tier III city showroom because the infrastructure for service will not exist. So even if customers do pick it up at these cities their Mahindra experience would not be good.

On the point of what next to expect, Mahindra is doing extremely well in Moto3. Can we expect them to launch a track machine in the 250-300 segment? They have the tech and the engine. They'll have to convert it into a road machine.
Every Motorcycle has a tale to be told and there is no greater privilage in the life of a rider than to have truly understood what his Motorcycle stands to tell. Some of the greatest stories in the world are not written, they are experienced.

One of the many reasons they say, "Four Wheels Move the Body, Two Wheels Move the Soul"

They shd "offer" service rather than acknowledge the lack of it. End of the day, if they dont offer a bike, how will people buy it??

Why is there a huge difference in servicing a 300cc bike as opposed to a 150 or 200 cc bike? I think Mojo would do well in cities where buyers don't get to choose from the full set of premium bikes i.e. the smaller cities but the clock is ticking.

Mahindra, if you are listening, hire a biker, probably myself for product planning and development...!!

you just need a right product.
