From Today, (April 1, 2017) the The state government of Karnataka has implemented the 18% road tax rule for any motorbike whose ex-showroom price is above INR 1 lakh. Existing road tax was around 13%. This hike will generate massive revenue to the government, and increases the on-road price of the motorcycles considerably. Notably, the state already had one of the highest road tax rate in the country.
The rule has already been put in effect. All dealers across the state are updating their price charts. However, all motorbikes costing below 1 lakh ex-showroom will continue with the 13% road tax.
Mr. Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister, who also is in charge of Finance portfolio, justified the hike saying the motorbikes costing above 1 lakh were "luxurious" hence the owner must pay the newly created "luxury" tax.
