Zigwjeels: New Pulsar 220 DTS-i will be the fastest Indian bike!

Zigwheels: New Pulsar 220 DTS-i will be the fastest Indian bike!

Set for a June 23 launch, the bike promises to kill competition with cut-throat pricing and class-leading performance. We have the details!

Bajaj Auto will be launching the 2009 version of its flagship Pulsar 220 tomorrow. Indian motorcycle enthusiasts need not be cynical of this particular upgrade - it is far from being a rouge and lipstick sticker job. The new Pulsar 220 will be the fastest Indian bike. We have ridden the bike and have complete figures, but our dear readers will have to wait until tomorrow to get the complete details.

Here's what we can tell our visitors for now. Bajaj Auto has taken the fuel injection system from the earlier bike off - the 2009 Pulsar 220 will be a DTSi, breathing through a carburetor. Stop before you think this is a step backward, since the new bike will be the fastest Indian street motorcycle with a claimed top speed in excess of 140 km/h. Our test figures match the claim!

That's not the best news though. Taking the FI off will give the new bike a stupendous price advantage over its competitors. Fuel injection is an expensive technology, and getting it off should give the new 220 a price advantage of about Rs. 10,000 straight up. That should bring it down to the price of the current Pulsar 200 DTSi, that's around Rs 70,000 ex-showroom Delhi.

The competition definitely has a fight on its hands, given that the new bike will be offering the best performance figures of the lot at a significantly lower price than its key competitors in the Indian performance bike market - the Yamaha YZF-R15 and the Hero Honda Karizma. But how fast is it in real world conditions? Any new bits apart from the carb? Does it have the handling to go with the power? Read it all in our breakneck speed first ride report early tomorrow, right here on ZigWheels.com!

details seems to be good. What's up with the fork? Is it an improvement or the same feature? And new colours?

Bigger cat-con, better starter clutch, and what not! Seems like this new iteration of P220 is really the step ahead.

P.S: I also see a new instrumentation, whereby the design of the tachometer has been changed. Also, it would be interesting to see what "new colors" Bajaj brings with this 'new' P220!

I would actually doubt that.. the R15 still has the R1'esque Full Fairing, which would sell it in India, even if it might be slower

But yes, if the price really is 80K OTR then it can take a bite out of ZMA sales and also affect the RTR 180's chances. And with almost 25-30K less than the R15, it could effect the buying decision of a few potential R15 buyers as well.

    Thanks Aryan,

So the story so far has been:

    >> Styling: Not much of a change expect Black Engine, Alloys and suspension
    >> DTSi: Looks like a Big Sized Carb from the pics

Figures that needs to be officially declared/ratified:

    >> Pricing: 70K ex showroom (??)
    >> Powerformance: Fastest Indian Bike (??)

    So to continue the discussion...

I'm interested in the Fuel Efficiency figures. Not that I bother, but just how the lack of FI will hit it or Bajaj.. has again done some magic here.

The bike has already arrived in the showroom(s), atleast here in Delhi.
xBhp is the Last place where any news can be got. All over the net you can get these news. It seems that higher officials in bigger companies pull strings in xBhp to keep pictures and news away from here! That can be the only logical explanation.

    Thread Opened.

Okay, since we are having OT discussions about the 'carb' P220 on the Ownership Experience thread of the P220 DTS-Fi, hence I am re-opening this thread. Please continue any and every discussion regarding the 'carb' P220 here, in this thread, exclusively until someone buys the 'new' P220 and we get a separate Ownership Experience thread of the 'carb' P220!

P.S: I noticed MG's msg. just now, regarding the re-opening of this thread on 22nd June. Hence, it is all the more apt to open this thread, now.
