  • New Hayabusa may feature semi-automatic transmission!

The fact that a new Hayabusa was paramount in Suzuki's lineup was as clear as day when the Falcon was taken off the shelves all around the world. The Suzuki Hayabusa has been around for very long and even a legendary motorcycle like it is not exempt from showing signs of age. When the rumours of a next-gen Hayabusa flooded the internet, there were many speculations with some even hinting to a supercharged engine. But according to the patent filings from Suzuki, the ones from January and the latest ones, a next-gen Hayabusa is in the works and while it may not be supercharged, it may have a nifty trick up its sleeve... semi-automatic transmission!

We first got to know about the motorcycle back in January, courtesy of a patent filing by Suzuki. That one showed an exhaust that would comply with the emission norms, attached to a heavily revised version of the existing Busa engine. While that is all good and merry, what really stood out in the past patent was the revised engine attached to an electronically-controlled semi-automatic transmission.

And recently, another patent filed by Suzuki shows a similar 1,340cc mill with a few improvements. Some sources even suggest that the engine is going to be bigger than that and will feature revised cylinders and a new head. Other than that, the latest patent filing also shows the frame, which is the same as the previous patent filing and definitely seems more modern and lighter than the frame of the previous-gen Hayabusa. Therefore, expecting the latest iteration of the Hayabusa to be lighter and more powerful won't be asking too much!

The more important detail though is the fact the latest patent shows the engine attached to a traditional manual gearbox. This is where things get a bit confusing. Will the next-gen Hayabusa be launched with a traditional manually-operated gearbox or will the hyper-sport-tourer be equipped with a semi-automatic gearbox? At this point, it is anyone's guess and since that is the case, we guess that we may even have two variants of the upcoming Hayabusa with the above-mentioned gearbox arrangements.

At any rate, many people believe that the next-gen Hayabusa may arrive at the end of this year but considering the patents, we believe that there's still a lot that needs to be done before we see a production variant of the new Hayabusa. Maybe a 2021 model that debuts at EICMA 2020 or INTERMOT 2020? We sure hope so. Till we wait for the latest Falcon to come knocking at our doors, we've been having our own fair share of fun with our Busa. Here, take a look for yourself.
