  • New Fuel Efficiency Norms in India by 2011

"Government of India is in the final stages of finalizing norms for fuel efficiency standards for automobile industry in India. According to the Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, transport industry contributes nearly 10-15 percent of the Total Greenhouse Gas emissions in India. New emission standards will considerably put certain amount of restrictions on the same. Apart from this, the government is also contemplating on reducing duty structure on import of hybrid cars and electric cars in India.

"We are right now engaged in finalising administrative formalities on how these standards has to be notified either through the Energy Conservation Act or the Motor Vehicles Act," stated Ramesh at the inaugural session of the two-day 4th Environment Friendly Vehicles (EFV) conference.

If the new norms are introduced it will be mandatory for auto manufacturers to sell vehicles with energy-efficiency tags. Currently, it is mandatory for them to declared fuel-efficiency as per the ARAI ratings. New CO2 emission norms in India are also coming into effect from April 2010 starting from 11 cities in the country. These norms will gradually be introduced pan India in a structured manner."

Atlast, our govt. has waken from sleep... Now, we will be seeing BS-1 / BS-2 / BS-3.... categories in 2 wheelers as well.

Imagine where all 2 strokes will be... if this comes into serious consideration from Govt. of India. Then cops will hunt down all 2-stroke bikes. RX-100/RD/SHOALIN/SHOGUN... Start looking for a good deal for your rides
You must be the change you wish to see in the world

              Great News!!

Sorry for being a bit pokey, but bro... dosen't the fuel efficiency mean something like "How fuel efficient my vehicle is" and Emission is like "How less or more polluting my vehicle is". I'm saying this because by reading the title of the post I was almost on the verge of getting Heart Broken, because if it would have been actually "Fuel Efficiency", then no bikes other than 100cc

Sorry bro.... don't take my coment otherwise... I'm just kidding!! Thanks for sharing the news

The Govt. cannot force 2-strokes off the road can it? There is still a large section of people using them. And if this helps the prices to fall, then good. I'm planning one for myself.

I have not read any news or anything but one can safely say that rules would be for bikes made after the rule has come. (They might force it in cities though , But all over India, Impossible!! )

NO, FI is not compulsory, a Cat Con would be sufficient and most of the recent 4 Strokes will pass.

2 Strokes and may be some older 4-strokes will be off road in some Metros. Like Delhi, where today even older Cars are not allowed to ply in the Capital.

They should be concentrating on more stricter norms on transport vehicles, and also on diesel vehicles being sold.

BS III is the way to go, no matter what we want.
As for older 2 strokes, atleast outside Metro & capital cities, you can own & use them.
Still, many rx's and max 100's can be seen in my city, but not in Jaipur though.

Government can't just cancel their ownerships after registration, can they? They can just limit their usage by making rules...

Frankly, I can't see a reason why 2 stroke fuel injected machines can't be in India, but that's a different topic...

+1 to that. Even I thought the same on reading the title of this thread. It would be apt if the title is renamed to "New emission norms in India"

Good to see the government has woken up from sleep. But I'm also waiting to see what kind of regulations they put forth for the big boys like the busa and the r1..

If I am not mistaken, this rule applies only to 'transport vehicles' meaning CVs. I doubt it applies to personal transport automobileslike cars & bikes.
