  • Delhi-ites to be Taxed for owning more than one Vehicle

A step towards reducing the worsening traffic conditions

"Delhi government is now planning to tax car owners who own more than one car. It has intimated the Delhi High Court that such a step was important to reduce the worsening traffic conditions.
"To ease out the traffic on the roads, first and foremost step is to put an hold on the registration of the vehicles. And for those people who have more than two vehicles registered on their names, we are planning to slap more taxes on them in the form of road taxes, parking charges, area pricing and other such taxes," stated Traffic Police counsel Vikas Pahwa. He was addressing a bench of three judges comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah, Justice S Muralidhar and Justice S. Ravinder Bhatt. The bench has asked the government to consider the plea owing to the fact that nearly 30 percent of the traffic on Delhi roads is cars and 62 percent are two-wheelers.
If the government decides to pass the bill, then car owners with more than one car will be levied extra taxes as per the rule. More details about the bill and actual rules are yet not clear but they will be primarily as road taxes or parking charges."

London kinda solved their traffic problems with strict carpooling laws, hefty city entry & parking charges and active promotion of public transport.

More than increasing number of vehicle registrations, complete lack of road etiquette is the biggest problem Indian roads are facing. Doesn't matter what city it is. Force peopel to drive decently and watch the bottleneck loosen up.

        +1

Also they should impose penalties for people running cars with less than 40% of its capacity! i.e a 6 Seater Innova should atleast have 3 people in it! this would help solve car pooling!

In Hyderabad, second vehicle owner (irrespective of a car or a bike) is already paying 3 to 4 percent extra life tax.

This will not stop people from buying another car. People who can afford two cars will be able and willing to pay the extra amount. People will learn to live with it. To fight the traffic there are many other things to look at and improve.

+1 to that. It will just be a gimmick to get more revenue.

This is a nice initiative but would hardly yield any returns. I guess people will just register the vehicles in other family members names to get around this or they might just cough it up considering that they can afford the second car.
We need really concrete steps like congestion charges, higher parking rates etc to discourage car users from using it unnecessarily. In parallel, public transport needs to be drastically upgraded so that people might consider it a viable option.

Won't matter much if the taxes levied aren't quite heavy. People who owns top class sedans, SUVs etc won't mind paying extra. For People who drives car which gives a mileage of less than 10 kpl, these won't be much of a burden.

Gov't should actually think other way. Delhi still doesn't have a good public transport system. Metro hasn't reached everywhere. NCR connectivity is pretty bad. Executives won't prefer crowded buses. Unless & until public transport is brought upto a world class level, things won't fair up easily.

Traffic police should instead look into slow moving autos in middle of the road struggling to be at even 20 kph, heavy loaded polluting trucks & better management of traffic.

Another extortion racket by the Govt

How much is the Metro's coverage in Delhi? Delhi members may be able to give us an idea.

If it covers only tiny section of the population this move is fit for condemnation. Our governments are eager to copy tax measures from the west. However, their standard of delivery of public service is conveniently ignored

How much time would a distance of 30kms of commute (one way) by public transport in London take?
