Some one sitting on top would've come to know about the numbering system adopted in the west last week; next morning he would've passed on this info to ppl saying "voila, I got a new idea"; this has become a headlines in today's news

In a country where a lot of states still continue to have only local language markers and signboards, this is a good move to further confuse people!

Samarth, you have a very good point. But any such change for development is painful.

I think this is a good move. There does exist some basis for such a move. A traveller on such a highway will instantly know which direction he is headed. This was the basis of the Interstate numbering system present in the US as well.

I just hope Google Maps changes over to the new system quickly.

this is a stupid decision! important highway and lengthy ones should occupy single digit ones (which it did) NH44 is not easy to remember compared to NH7

Highway renumbering? I fail to see the scientific impact of this when we dont even have the signboarding to places en route etc properly done. The sheer amount of money involved in changing the numbers at critical places, not to mention, the umpteen resources which will go out of date (like Eicher road atlas).

I hope there is a long drawn out plan from the government and transport planners, otherwise we could be heading for a virtual mayhem and tax payer's money will go down the drain.

                          highway renumbering
what is the propose of this thing i cant see any!
what the hell now i'll have to buy new road maps(because i don't have a gps).
there will be a lots of work to be done in the virtual maps. its very easy to say they are renaming but its a massive job to rename every milestone every board etc.
just a wast of money, time and human resources.
instead of renaming they should spend the money to upgrade the roads which are nowhere to international standard.

What's the problem with re-numbering ? It's a need since lots of new NHs have been added !

I dont think the number of highways is going to exceed 1 less than infinity which can be accounted by any number.

"Sources said that though the renumbering is complicated and will take some time for people to get accustomed to, this has been done considering the increasing length of NHs. In fact, the NH network has increased from 21,378 km in 1947 to 70,934 km. Officials said this will cross one lakh km by 2021."

^^^^^Apart renumbering the existing highways, our government should focus on how much they have suceeded in building up highways.., a quick comparison based on above information.
                                1. In 1947 the length of the highways is 21,378 kms (i believe most of these roads are laid by british govt)

                                2. By 2010 the length of the highways is 70,934 kms

                                3. The length of the highways after independence is 49,556 kms.
                                (i.e,(2010-1947 = 63 years), therefore 70,934 (2010) - 21,378(1947)= 49,556 kms

                                4. This means from last 63 years the development is 49,556 kms of highways.

                                5. Again, based on above news our government should reach 29,066 kms { Expected 1,00,000 kms - 70,934(present highways in kms) } in 11 yrs.
                                (2021 - 2010 = 11) which is not an easy task.

                                6. I still dont understand, why they want to renumber the highways, when they have so much to do in span of 11years.

                                7. And sorry for responding to this post very late.(dont worry, sometimes I am also like our government ,i respond late)

                                8. Correct me if I went wrong in simple additions and subtractions.

                                Thanks, KoushiK
