The reason why our Government choose to renumber the Highways is simple,
the officials feel that they don't enough money in there pockets, so made this simple proposal to government, so they can make some extra cash.
and about the task of renumbering the highway, well who cares-they want there share.

Koushik - your math is right, but there're one more fact to be added that for over 53 odd years, India was not participating in globalization. Since it is now competing with world maket, the 11 years & 29K kms is a little I'd say.

A few years ago, when they were laying NH in AP, one of the stretch contract had been awared to a certain Malysian JV. That company had completed the project about 3 months ahead of time. Their way of working was something like 1 Day, 1 Km for 1 cr. So looking at that math, 365 Kms per state which works to 10K odd kms for all the states put together for one year. So in a span of 11 years, its perfectly possible to achieve more than 1L kms without having the present days highways.

But, this is India, with full of red tapism & buerocractic people. Will that happen? Only time will answer.

@aargee - tht's an insightful news, I must say...1day/1Km/1cr...feels like, if money is rottenly plenty, u can build one km stretch in a day...

You mean, you need to change it every now-and-then?

According to information in Wikipedia, the Mumbai-Goa highway has been renumbered from NH-17 to NH-66.

It reminded me of Route 66 from the Cars movie.

Man this has already started confusion.
I Hope the Indian Government sorts out this matter and declares the official numbering on their website.

BTW they have a page on Facebook also. Just search for "National Highways Authority of India".

Some nut case must have given this idea to Govt.

We have lot of numbers, do they think they are running short of numbers .

They could have left the present highway numbers as it and name the future highways in their so called scientific way. So atleast renaming all the sign boards and most importantly confusions could be avoided.

i guess, this is another way of making money, under the table, why can't they use the money instead -in making new roads.

frankly, i am seriously against this remaning things - be it highways or cities. just a way to either earn money or votes.
