  • Judiciary opinion against bikers

The Mumbai High Court has upheld a ban on 2-wheelers on the JJ flyover. This ban may or may not be reasonable, for it may so be that the flyover, in its current state, may be genuinely dangerous for bikers. What is more worrying is the prevalent negative mindset in the judge's mind about bikers.

My daily route is Link Road between Malad and Goregaon. Two of my pet peeves are bikers jumping on to the footpaths to create one more "lane" for themselves and and jumping signals (often during the brief interval when one traffic stream is stopped and another begins).

Unless something pro-active is done, the judge's words on a city-wide ban might come true some day.

The Judge is right. Bikers are a nuisance. They do climb on to the footpath, a huge number of them. They also jump red lights with aplomb. They race on the streets in full traffic. They avoid wearing helmets as much as possible. They try to break the law to its limits.

That is where xBhp comes in. That is where we are trying our hand to overhaul the general image of the biker. That is where we are organising Safe Ride Workshops. That is where we intend to bring sanity to this whole warped vision of people towards bikers which is not entirely false.
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

What the judge said is quite true. Just go to any junction, and watch the traffic for 10 minutes. More than cars or trucks or any other vehicles, its bikers that ride rash and irresponsibly. Bikes give us a certain extra freedom, like requiring lesser space on the road, but that is misused to the utmost possible extent.
But those who believe in safe riding, practice it and (most importantly) promote it can definitely make a difference.

I don't think its possible to 'ban' 'bikers' (NOT!) in the city, because maximum of the city population use a 2-wheeler as transport, because they can't afford cars.

It would be a very unpopular idea.

And the judge is mistaken. The people he's referring to are not 'bikers'. They might be 'posers' or 'freaks' or 'dunderheads' or perhaps 'a nut on a motorcycle'. No sir, they don't qualify as bikers.
          You get the point?? :D

            hi!!
people who live in Mumbai will only know how difficult it is to travel from the central suburbs to south mumbai
            banning is absolutely no solution
if u have seen the stupid safety measures taken by the traffic police you will die laughing
and itna sab police and HC is telling about bikers why dont they look at themselves?police hardly ever punish the defaulters properly
they will just take some chai paani from the bikers and there these stupid rule breakers are free again to start the nonsense
let that judge travel below the flyover one day and he'll realise the pain
even today in front of one idiot on the palm beach road without any helmet just "khilaofyd" some of his cash and then went away
so if they expect that such things are gonna instill responsibility in bikers then they've gotta think again
and here the "pehchan" factor is also high
anyone knows some police guys somewhere nothing will happen to him
and personally im quite p***** off with the attitude of mumbai police and even the NM police

THats right these guys dont deserve a licence... these guys ruin the name of true bikers like us.

Guys Pls don't use a helmet as a cover to avoid fine... consider it as a life saving factor. and don't think that rules are made to be broken.

Thanks Aryan, for moving this to the correct forum - I keep forgetting to post in correct forum.

A crowd is as intelligent as the dumbest character in it and public forms its opinion about bikers based on the "high visibility" traffic signal offenders and extra lane creators.

I would like to take part in a workshop very much as I am pretty much self taught recently and desire to improve my skills - not just biking, but with regards to road traffic laws and motorcycle maintenance.

I think xBHP should create an MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) style organisation. I missed such an organisation very much in December last year!

I would like to give a suggestion to the judge; 'why not ban everybody come on to the roads? The roads will be completely free of traffic and the judges can go to court without any hurdles"

Exactly. Instead of this ban, they could have had CCTV Cameras, Surveillance Methods, etc. The jury seems heavily biased against bike riders, as evident from their statements.

First, you issue licenses to fools & idiots, and then you ban the wise guys too. What a fair way of running a country...

Guys, it happened, just because it was a judiciary decision, not a political one. People of this country won't let such a bill pass, using any means possible...

A one sided undemocratic decision. I agree there are problems with bike riders, but this is a cheap way out.

I've commuted that route for years and found the flyover reduces travel time between jj and vt from ~30-45 minutes to under 10.

The problem is two-sided. There are two sharp turns when going from jj to vt. The first, which looks sharper, isn't the problem one. The one at the mandvi telephone exchange is where numerous bikers have crashed and died. I'm one of the survivors. Now, the first side to the problem is bikes going too fast for that turn. Keep it below 40 and you WILL make it through. The solution to this is a couple of those police barricades in a staggered formation which will force vehicles to slow down, negotiate the barricades, and then continue. The second side to the problem is engineering related. Poor design imo. The deck of the jj viaduct is made up of a series of precast concrete blocks. Each pair of blocks have metal expansion joints between them. Unfortunately for fast bikers, the turn at the mandvi tel exch has an expansion joint right at the apex. The expansion joint is covered by a 1-metre wide steel plate running across the width of the road. This is where bikes slip if leaned over too much when going too fast. Solution? Some kind of grip increasing material to cover the steel plate.

So here, we have a situation where both speeding bikers as well as the PWD are to blame. Sadly, the court seems biased against bikers, typical indian narrow-mindedness. I wonder what the judge would say if he saw me ride. I ride fast, some might say too fast, but never rashly. I always stop behind the ped crossing at signals, wait for green before moving and frequently stop for pedestrians to cross in front of me. A few bad apples do not justify closing down a road.
