There are clearly many reasons to ban these un-sightly, un-ruly, extremely slow traffic jarring public transportation vehicles driven by un-educated, passenger fleecing drivers.

The government will do immense amount of good to the roads and drivers of delhi by kicking them out and allowing instead faster, cleaner, better regulated (regulatable) modes of transportation. Each city must grow and there is no reason to live in the past. The faster these monoliths of the past are phased out, the better it is.

Did you know that even a junked Auto has a huge price tag because of the license associated with it and that 90% of the auto fleet in the city is controlled by mafia who own these croaks. Then there is the dealer mafia who ensure that a vehicle that should cost no more than a lac or so ends up costing 3-4 lacs, out of reach of the poor drivers who are actually driving them. These machines are rented out the poor drivers who have no choice but to fleece the passengers in order to make ends meet.

The Delhi Government will actually be kicking out this Mafia and bringing in better modes of transportation hopefully with better license management so that poor people can then have their licenses and get hold a decent day's living.

Yeah, correct like this mafia won't be able to afford the electric car right ? /sarcasm

Apart from the pollution issue getting solved, i don't see any other problems being answered. Slow autorickshaws getting replaced by slow electric cars = slow traffic. Autorickshaws driver getting electric cars, so nothing changes in that department. Yes money flow increases, electric car company make good money and so does the government. It's a money making scheme in disguise, if you ask me.

I am sure with this decision.. there will be stiff opposition.. And would not be surprized if there is a CHAKKA JAAM in delhi in coming days.. calling for a protest against the move.

The better move would be to scout for those 25000 illegal Auto first. And remove them from the roads. We have to look at it from holistic view also. Because it will kill employement for loads of people in the ecosystem. If the removal of Auto Ricks are done in phased manner... (which I am sure is the only way).. then it will not create troubles for passengers.

P.S - not all Auto Rick drivers are bad. I had his small incident when I left my bag in Rick. The bag didnt have anything costly.. but had a Notebook.. which was very important. I felt frustrated.. Next day.. I saw the rickshaw driver came back specifically to return my stuff. Fortunately my bag had my ID card.. which had my address and ofcourse the photo. So he came over to return my stuff. I felt soo thankful.

One improvement I seriously want in delhi is removal of Cycle rickshaws in delhi.

Yes they can still be ther.. but in small numbers.. in old parts of city... where you still want to have that old slow feeling.

I want them to be removed from major parts of delhi.. They clog the roads.. its the slowest means of transport in delhi.. and number of cycle rickshaws are growing day by day. I see them as bigger pain in butt than the Auto Ricks.. since Autos can still move faster. Cycle rickshaw walas are illiterate and cause more problems.. since they just dont have the ability to undrstand the Traffic rules. ""Kahin bhi rickshaw ghusa dete hain ".. without bothering whether.. it might put scratches on the cars. Go to Chandni chowk with any new car and try to comback without having scrtaches.

Same drivers, same mafia, just a different vehicle. They will still be cutting through traffic like mad.

Electric vehicles will also not do any good. Delhi is hardly able to supply enough power to homes in summers. Imagine, that power being shared with 10s of thousdands of "eco friendly" vehicles. Charging them will also take electricity and generating electricity takes money and resources. Unless they find a way to generate electricity for free, it wont do any good.

Clean fuels like Hydrogen or Air powered vehicles are better option. They wont do any good for traffic, but will be good for environment.

Govt can also create cycle lanes to encourage people to use cycles. I try to ride my cycle as much as possible, its healthier and more environment friendly.

Please also bring in more AC buses and more metro stations. Its WAY better.

The NANO would be a good option to replace the autorickshaws..Once there was a rickshaw strike in my city and the roads seemed to be wider and riding in the city too was so much fun..I just hate it when they take a sharp U turn[thanks to the cage having a handlebar than a steering wheel]without looking in the mirror and end up creating road mess. Good that someone is atleast thinking of banning them.

Though it would be a good move, and a very tough fight for the government to ban or phase out the autos I still wonder if this would be any better in anyways.

I hadnt used public transport in the last 15 odd years or so, but of late, I commute to my office in Metro. Though it is one of the best public means of transport, but anytime when I have to go by some other mode, it takes a toll on my pocket, my patience and money.

the problem lies with US only. We as the kind of humans that we are, are basically uneducated, illiterates. Most of us who talk about autos causing traffic jams should look inside ourselves and ask how many times have we been good on road. When we are in cars, we curse bikers, when we are riding bikes, we abuse cagers, when we are commuting in an auto, we curse bus walas, car walas, bike walas, cows, horses and police and hand cart walas.

Definitely, autos are not a very safe mode of transportation for humans of for goods, it is a thing from the past, but the concern here is more than that.

I properly implemented regulation on any service would ensure that it is getting its glory, like in the case of Metro, else it would again be a show down.

                all cheers

I am in support of such a decision, rude auto "wallahs", refusal to ply, not plying by the meter, etc., we all have somewhere or the other experienced their high headedness. I try to use (whenever required) radio taxis which is far more expensive than an auto, but their ready availability is a problem.

Lastly, these auto guys sheild their autos with hard iron casings on the sides and the rear that does ruins our vehicles even at a slight contact. This problem is pecular to north, as i did not saw even a single auto with such metals in south (chennai).
