    From my experience...

1)Speed 97 makes a difference in hot conditions(Summer and bumper traffic) and in pulling high speeds(200kmph+), than any premium fuel.
    2) Of all the premium fuels I find IOC Xtra-Premium very useful and havent had any knocking issues at all.
    3) I try to stick to Speed 97 for city commuting and Xtra premium for the highways.
4)Almost Forget Speed 97 gives much better mileage than any premium fuel..

Completely agree with Akhil, that a Clean Fuel makes a huge difference(atleast on my R1)...

^^ loads of useful info there, thanks guys... I also feel that 'clean' fuel is more important than anything else.

I am surprised too... will check again tomorrow just to be sure..
But if it is different, then why !?

Fireblah: Don't worry about it. Tenhut's Blade is special, the minute he swings a leg over the bike, the octane requirement on it drops by 4 RON

Oldfox thats a nice piece of info which is completely new to me. Never bothered with this fuel issue as I never really experienced knocking.
I will have to read through your post twice to understand it.

Speed91 or normal gasoline, Both should meet the specification of min.91 octane.. similar is the case for power and xtra premium.
Euro 2 grade (octane min.88) which is still available in some non-metro areas , will be completely taken out of the market W.E.F 1st october 2010.

In mumbai, Even if we fill gasoline from HP or IOC bunks..it was actually produced by BPCL refinery.. Similarly all petrol pump uses IOC's fuel in chennai..

But Speed 97 produced by BPCL's mumbai refinery is transported to all metros.
Copy Pasted into my personal diary. Thanks.

this observation when clubbed with 95RON or higher written on Tank !
Bankim, Never had an issue climbing flyovers, I think no matter what the gear, I have never had to downshift. With 1800cc if we have problems climbing flyovers, its time for getting a check up done.

Isn't Speed-93 available? I think it should suffice.

The company owned/operated BPCL out-let over here stocks them.

                As a rough guide:

11:1 and higher - 97 octane for regular use, 91 octane in a pinch
                10.5:1 - 93 octane for regular use, 91 octane in a pinch
10:1 and lower - 91 octane for regular use, 87 octane in a pinch

The critical factor is whether the fuel is clean or not. I ride an MT-01 with 8.4:1 comp ratio and I suspect it will run just fine if I put kerosene in it (kidding) and I can get away with any fuel I can find from a clean (prefer COCO) gas station.

I am surprised that with such a high number of imported vehicles being sold, there isn't a push to bring premium fuels into the mainstream.

What I mean to say is that majorly, knocking will occur under high load - low rpm operation. Meaning you pull the bike in high gear from low speeds. It will also occur if you accelerate really hard from standstill or from low speeds. Avoid these two situations and you'll hardly hear a knock out of the engines on 91 Octane or equivalent.
But isn't that fun to loose traction instantly that's a part of riding man these bikes are aggressive and I don like riding my R1 like a civilized Wat I feel is aggressive riding or sudden opening of the throttle is not much possible with 91 RON fuels until unless one is in higher rpms

i accelerate hard from standstill and in low revs but have never experienced knocking and have never tanked on 97(ONLY Shell SUPER). Infact in one of the vids theres a clip where i accelerate from standstill ! Why is my engine not knocking ? Or is it knocking and I dont know where to look for it ?
Am I alone or is there anyone else with me on this ?

Now that's really strange TenHut, both me and Fireblah facing lots of knocking problems with our bikes... I think may be due to Shell super, Try extra premium once and let us know.

May be that GROWLER never lets you hear any knocking sound, all you do is scare the shit outta people at the full blown starts....

The problem here is clean fuel. We're probably missing that here.

Why doesn't Shell open up outlets in Kolkata? Thet will be the end of all worries. But then again, things go weirdly in Kolkata....

BTW, this might go OT, but I'm sure there are a few exotic cars in Kolkata. What happens to them? No fuel.
                          You get the point?? :D

Octane boosters are a scam.... Just think about it logically, you are putting something extra in your tank... now be it anything, any tom dick harry compound/chemical, the fact is, its something thick and slimy going into your superbike's tank !! I wont do any such thing unless its tried/tested and recommended by NASA.
India being India, we can never tell which fuel is adulterated.. best is stick to fuel pumps you trust and say Om Namah Shivay !
