    Hello Everybody,
    This is AmeyashoguN, from chembur Mumbai India currently riding RTR 180 (+ TVS Suzuki Shogun 96 Model Without Catcon), recently while i was searching for Yahama RD350, TZR, RD400 Daytona Edition & Ducati in affordable price. to buy next. On eBay motors (eBay international if you have anything better pls share) after searching I found neat & clean bike in San-Francisco area now if you convert the money into indian price it comes around Rs. 55,000/- or some according to current rate. ok now the question I know very little about imports & duty. if the duty is 100% than the bike cost will be Rs.1,10,000/- still it's great (for me) to buy that machine clean what will be hidden prices & trouble I might face? & about the customs duty & stuff
    wat to check & papers how much for converting papers where to do how to do here in mumbai? want to know same for the cars please help For Genuine Buy don't want to get in trouble after the purchase.

            i can get used r1 for 3.5lakhs in Dubai,,,but i dont know how much its going to cost me for importing it to india.i want to import it but am illiterate of the rules and tax which r laid by indian got,so guys throw some light

              Ameyashogun- The whole importation of bikes has been discussed in detail in many different threads so if you do some more searching, you will find more information.

              As for ebay international, its purely your call, because, there are risks of buying a bike (and making advance payment) from somebody you only know from an ad on the net. Anyway, here below is the Indian customs rules for importation in simple language (all valid till the 2011 govt budget).

              (a) Used bikes: Only NRIs are given the privilege on TR(Transfer of Residence) to import one car or one motorcycle that they owned for their personal use in the foreign country, but unlike their personal effects that attract 30% customs, the bike will attract 110% customs, plus some education cess or tax plus some more which all work out to about 150%. Ofcourse, they will reduce some amount for depreciation from the total value (they have a fixed chart for depreciation). BUT, the bike should not be older than 15 years and the NRI should have owned it abroad for atleast 1 year continuously. Speedo reading km or mile is no problem. Also no problems with emission standards etc. Just that the NRI has to be eligible for TR, which is that- TR can be availed once every 3 years only and he should not have stayed in India for more than 6 months in the past 2 years. THEREFORE, permanent Indian residents are not allowed to import a Used bike. Full stop.

              (b) New Bike: Either imported by NRI or Resident Indian attracts a penalty also, but all put together customs plus penalties etc should work out to lil less than 200% for NRI or Resident Indian.

                    even if you get the bike, if it doesnt have the requisite papers, you will not even be able to take it out from the port of landing. Too complicated IMO. Better option would be to save and go for a bike available locally ( all over india even!! ).

                    The issue of getting lost in getting the paperwork cleared etc is too big a burden.

                    Also if you underprice the invoice to show that the bike is cheaper than what you paid for it, the customs are gonna impose duty as per the structure they have and they do maintain records of pricing of stuff from all over the world. So they can impose duty as per their records/convenience which will be a bigger mess.

                      THough if you can get the seller to dismantle the bike, and send it across in separate crates over a period of 6 months or so, in the name of different people here in india, you might just get away with it being imported as spare parts, and then assembling it at your own ease. Then you would just have the hassle of registering it in the name of a lower cc bike, getting the engine and chassis numbers transplanted, and an illegal number plate registered, or using an existing registered bike as the donor.

                      ( where there is a will, there is a way.. where there isnt a way.. we indians are right upto the job!!! lol!! )

                        Buy an imported bike with ALL the below documents:

                        1.) RCTC

                        If not your CITY(State is door ka baat, even for CITY) - NOC -i.e. form no.28 signed and stamped. Form 29 and 30 signed as well. check with an RTO Agent for number of copies of each form. If I am not mistaken, its 3 for 28, 2 for 29 and 1 for 30.

                        2.) READ THE OWNERS NAME ON THE PAPERS (Registered owner). People say it is not possible to transfer an sbk, well thats bull crap. You can.
                        Any ways - DO YOU KNOW THE OWNER PERSONALLY? HAVE YOU seen him/met him personally? demand a license/passport copy of the same. If not possible, atleast check if the signs on the RC and the transfer forms are the same.

                        3.) Take a license/passport/pan card copy of the person you are buying it from, including a Delivery note on a STAMP PAPER saying you are not responsible for any previous accidents.

                        4.) Bill of ENTRY : THE MOST IMP DOC. Should have vehicle's original amount *120 % duty on it. Also check for fake marks.

                        5.) Port of dispatch, dispatch bill, received port details, Landing bill and payment proof of the same. Passport copy of the importer.

                        6.) Letter to the commissioner of RTO for requested registration.

                        7.) tax reciept (One time)

                        8.) Octroi receipt if any

                        9.)ON ALL Papers verify engine and chassis number and verify with the vehicle.

                        Some say it is not possible to get the above. I have seen all these docs when a friend bought a bike.

                          Dear Friend, you need to check on the following points before going for payments,

                          1. Will the seller ship the bike to India, if yes which port and by which medium, and what about the shipping costs bearing
                          2. Do you have enough contacts to get the customs clearance and the DRI Clearance to the bike.

                          Consider these two questions as the prime important ones and then go for the same. I have observed many of the ebay international sellers of bike and car section dont ship their products to India.

                            a quick run through of what I plan to/or want to do

                            I am in NZ. Planning to buy a bike for the next two months before finally arriving in India for good. Have been living here for 3 yrs now. Can pick up a decent bike (anything above 600cc, 94-04 model) and wouldn't mind paying 120% on (original cost - depreciation). Is it doable? anything in particular i need to look at? any particular piece of paper i need to grab before getting the bike shipped.

                            Looking forward for a reply.

                              The bike in NZ should be owned there under your name continuously for minimum period of 1 year. As for the importation requirements & customs I have already explained it earlier in this same thread (things have not changed much in the 2011 govt budget from what I explained). Look here:




                              The depreciation chart presently used by customs is as follows:

                              4.0 % per quarter in the 1st year x 4 quarters = 16% total
                              3.0 % per quarter in the 2nd year x 4 quarters = 12% total
                              2.5 % per quarter in the 3rd year x 4 quarters = 10% total
                              2.0 % per quarter in the 4th year x 4 quarters = 08% total
                              From 5th year onwards its the similar % per quarter as the 4th year. I think the max depreciation allowed is 60% (not very sure, but something like that)

                              To clear the bike in India, the Customs will require the registration book in NZ (to verify how long you have onwed it there, the model year of bike, chassis no etc), also your original purchase invoice in NZ (its just a requirement, but they decide the price as per their own calculation), export certificate from NZ customs when the bike leaves their country and your original passport. Well they also take the shipping cost & shipping insurance cost & that is also added on the value of the bike on which the customs will be charged. In short- its a complicated & time consuming procedure...
