  • Are the Japanese bikes slimming down??

Last night I was flipping some pages of the November issue of Bike India and to my surprise I found that the guys have covered all the upcoming superbikes/tourers/streets.
But I was really dissapointed. All the Japanese manufacturers have made significant(and real good) changes to their bikes technologically,,but what happened to the visual appeal guys??

KAWASAKI: Just look at the Ninja 650r....whats that,,,where did the goliath go??
The zx10r looks like its not had fuel since the price hike and shredded some metal to the ribs!!....look at the exhaust...ugly.

HONDA: The 08 Blade..Sunny bhaiya took some real shots of the beauty and I was pretty convinced about the design. But when I compared it to the earlier models,it looks so puny and slim!

SUZUKI: The k5-k6 Gixxers(one of my favs) ,the most road friendly litres but equally appealing.Look at the 08 one, whats with the birdie headlight??

YAMAHA: I had a chance of watching Ken da's R1 for quite some time and it was HUGE. and now ,,the 09 R1....its more bubblish and roundy than ever!!

On the other hand have a watch at the other parts of the world : the APRILLIA RSV4 looks like a proper SUPERBIKE. Even the bulldog RC8 is a stunner to watch at!! and lets not talk about DUCATIs and MVs here(they are a different breed altogether) .

I know the superbikes are designed, keeping attention to all the necessary details and they change shape and size to accommodate the technologies and other factors...but here I am just talking about design features and nothing else.

*NOTE*- The above quoted words are purely my own thoughts and may not be liked by all,,and I have no grudges against the manufacturers(even im saving to buy a Gixxer )

Ah yes, the 2008 cbr, even though its vastly improved and rated the best track bike (bike india masterbike article in november issue)
the front looks as if someone landed a hard punch

even the quad projector lights of the R1 will be sorely missed. the 2009 r1 looks much less mean than the previous versions.

good to see that the nakeds arent going soft on looks

Finally someone has got my point! The Jap 4 are not as big as they used to be! Also they have toned down the aggression in design!

Just look at the 954RR and now the 1000RR.!

More so if u look at the Gixxer in person it is still as big as it used to be!

Ninja is ok. Yam is also ok.

But surely the Japanese bikes are slimming down!

For me, the lust-inducing looks era has long ended.

With the nakeds, the new design theme is Industrial. The pipes and wires look of a complex refinery or industry.

And regarding Gixxer, it has stacked headlight from 2004+ This arrangement has less aggression than side by side headlights. Look at all stacked lighted bikes. KTM RC8,Ducati 999[which is changed to later],Pulsar 220!
Now Gixxer 600 and 750 has changed to the second style! Suzuki realized it finally![i hope Bajaj get it]
And compare them to side by side eyed lighted bikes-R1,Blade,Ninja!
              u get my point?

This is a very good topic!

i agree with u the japs have reduced in size but i ride the 08 ninja 10r and i found it to be still quite big when compared to yamaha r6,r1 or the gxxr 600 or gxxr 750 i think its the same size as the gxxr 1000 or slightly bigger not sure about the honda rarely anyone drives it here in saudi.

                  @nitrosatya:couldnt get you very well??

@kar1zma: i am not comparing 600s with litres here but litres with older litres here. compare ur kwacker with an earlier version...though it may not feel very small but it would look small and less aggressive though.

Yes, the Japs have grown smaller is Size over the past 10 years atleast ... Definitely!

and yes, they will go slimmer yet, if they find it possible ...

The thing is that Japanese Competition 600s & 1000s have evolved so much, that finding drastic size changes is becoming close to impossible ...

I still can't believe the changes in 08' CBR 1000R ... somehow, they did it!

Blade,Ninja and R1 have headlights like eyes. One besides each other. Horizontally set. This setup can create a good effect of two eyes looking at you in anger.

But Gixxer from 2004 onwards had stacked headlights. One on top of other. Just like a Busa,Ducati 999 and KTM RC8. This setup doesn't create aggressive effect as much as former one. But they have now changed the design on GSXR 750 and 600. Suzuki have realized the effect of two eyed headlight design. Also have Ducati with their 1098.

                      Hope u get it now.

                        ive got a 2002 gsxr 600 and a 2004 zx10.

the 600 seems like a boat compared to a compact zx10 which weighs about 15 kilos less again .

in this time , less weight= better power. have a look at the triumph 675. its the most anorexic bike out there. but i love it. simply coz skinny bikes handle the best.
                        same with an 08 blade.

thats y im not the biggest fan of the r1 and the zx10 current model.

I already mentioned that though we know that the changes in he design are to accomodate plus points for the bikes but then .....what happens to the LUST factor?? I would rather buy a NEW K6 gixxer(i know its impossible) than the new one. And i simply love the daytona even for the way it looks(pardon me, I said the way,,not how huge).

                          @nitrosatya:thanks.absolutely got it.
anywayz the 999 looked cool with that assembly, but yeah i doubt the RC8 looking less aggressive with those.

well u are right the earlier bikes were much beefier but i guess mainly due to tanks and fairing having one roundish shape rather than todays bike which are more sharper in appearence

do go to my thread and look at the pics

the tank is more aerodynamic than earlier models which look like big tubs inverted. hence the slimming effect.

the major difference i see in my kwack and the 07 is he headlight i kinda like mine better
other that that not much i would say
