If you can manage to save up/arrange 10lakhs from your cash flow and are willing to let go of 4-5 lakhs out of this, you can very well afford an sbk in india as of today.
What i mean is, you buy a used sbk. 3 most popular ones these days- street triple CBR650 n z800 could be had for around 6-6.5 or even less. Now consider you sell her 1-3 yrs down the line recovering a part of your expenditure you might be looking at a depreciation of 1-3 lakhs Wch will be your actual price for bike. Now consider the remaining 3.5 lakhs( of the original 10 L i mentioned above) as your remaining budget for gear maintenance and your dating expenses.
Of these the major one would be gear and comprehensive insurance.
Gear , if you chose to go for the non-boastable but pretty apt stuff, can be had for around 50-60k. I won't be very hopeful of recovering part of its cost later on so if u decide to save up some more, go for a very short term preowned gear but dont buy unless you try else you lose money. If luck be on your side you d save another cpl of thousands on gear.
Now you are left with around 3lakhs to maintain upkeep repair and accessorise your ride. Maintenance in most. Cases would be very low provided you dont meet with a crash in which case your bigger worry might not be the bike per se but the fine prints of your Mediclaim or god forbid your life insurance.
Assuming you spend 50-75k during your duration of owning her, you are left with a decent 2-2.5L as dating expenses. Taking her to BIC , attending a riding school at kari/MMST taking her on a lond ride, this is where this money Will go and trust me, your touring expenses will be much larger compared to your fuel costs so if you are already vacationing 4 -8 times a year( just weekend trips and hotelling) you can even tick off a big chunk of this loose change from your dating expenses.
Once you own a big bike, it d be pity if you dont do things i mentioned. Put life into your yrs of sbk ownership rather than years into your life as a sbk owner.
Crux of the budget story- if you dont crash on a sbk, you can afford to own her much easier than you think. In above example your actual expenditure would be 5-6 lakhs over 2-3 yrs as you ll recover 3.5-4.5lakhs of the total 10 when you sell her.
My personal pearl of wisdom- if you are buying her for experiencing 150kmph+ speeds or teying to take her speedo needle as much clockwise as possible, dont buy her. You might need your Mediclaim/LIC unexpectedly.
My personal pearl#2 of wisdom- buy her now and ride safely. You got but one life. P.s. you get to die only once too.
