• Operational and Maintenance cost of a SBK in India

Mods,

I hope this thread would be a valid one, if not, please close it right away.

I was wondering what would the Operational and Maintenance cost of any SBK being driven in India. People like me are more money oriented than having a star on my jacket saying 'proud owner of SBK' (no offense meant to the rightful owners). The bill amount or the food fed for running the massive machine makes my heart skip a beat and keeps me awake all night calculating the cost.
Divya Sharan, I remeber you quoting that buying the Elephant is one and keeping him running is another. So, before bleeding our hard earned money, I would like to know from the fellow xbhpians who owns a SBK, what is it like on your monthly expense.

Please throw some numbers on the palette with your Model name and Servicing and Operational cost

Cheers!!!!

Maintenance and Operation cost for a SBK

Hi Mods,

Hope this thread is fine for a start. I am trying to gather information from fellow SBK owneres here to understand the maintenance and operation cost of their SBKs
This would give me/us a fair idea as how much is actually being spent after buying such a bike. This might have an impact on the perspective of potential buyers like me in the future.

The link mentions the import duty to be 142 per cent for a used bike. Trust me this figure is more like 230 per cent by the time all the charges are calculated!!!!

I should know as I recently imported a car under the misconception that the duty rate was about 142 per cent!!!

Top tip - do not go down the import a bike on your own route unless you are a masochist with a particular fondness for bureaucracy!!! Like someone once said on a forum (I forget which) - "Importing a vehicle into India is like being sodomi**d by an African Bull Elephant" (I apologise in advance to the mods for using possibly unacceptable language).

If someone is keen to import I can refer you to an excellent clearing agent in Chennai who handled my car import.

Saying that if you can diy/have a trusted mechanic, look after your steed properly and have friends/family who visit from abroad and are able to oblige by bringing spares if necessary on their visits I dont think its any more expensive than owning a car. Remember at the end of the day Superbikes and Supercars are only mechanical objects and the basics are technically no different to your average Maruti 800!! Just get hold of the Service Manual and Spare Parts Manual - take the plunge to troubleshoot and tackle problems along the way. Its a lot of fun and you get to know your bike intimately!

Ultimately it is a matter of passion. A word of warning though - Once you ride a superbike everything else will seem like wading through treacle. Its like taking a drug and getting hooked to the speed (no pun intended)

The link is more generic about the Do's and Dont's of a SBK and its pros and Cons. I am looking specifically for the operation and maintenance cost of a SBK - Say a Z800, what would a person spend on average per month.
prateek2210, the link was very informative.

The answer to that is "How long is a piece of string?"
But honestly buying a sbk is more of decision of the heart rather than from the mind! If you can afford to buy a sbk (10-15 lakhs) then surely you can afford to maintain it! If you got doubts best to stay away from one. Also looking at your previous bikes ask yourself if you are really ready for a sbk. 180-200 bhp in a bike weighing 180kgs is not a joke. It will rip your guts out if you make a mistake!! Riding a RE 500 and going straight to a sbk is like jumping onto a motorbike after riding a bicycle!!!

Maintenance cost of Harley's and Ducati's

Hi All,

I am planning to buy either Ducati Monster 821(my preferred choice because of amazing performance) or Harley Davidson Street bob(my dream bike). I know that these are two totally different bikes so sorry for asking a question about both of them. Both the bikes costs almost same and are in my budget(11.5 Lakhs on road), but its a huge amount so I researched a lot about them and on many websites I found that the maintenance cost of both the bikes is huge. mainly servicing cost. Which is somewhere around 50,000 INR per service on average. Which is actually "HUGE"

According to Ducati's Gurgaon dealership service costs somewhere between 8,000 to 12,000 INR per service which is schedules at 1 year or 15,000 KM(whichever is earlier)
and According to Harley's sales guy Harley's service cost between 8,000 to 10,000 per service, which is schedules at 1 year or 8,000 KM(whichever is earlier)

I would be glad if you guys can help me with exact figures, that how much does it cost for keeping, maintaining and servicing these bikes

I am planning to purchase one of them before November 2015
Any help would be much appreciated

50k per service?

Sir jee, please recheck!
12-15k per service including oil change, oil filter, air filter check, chain lube, wash etc.

Extra:
Tires: 30-50k a pair.
Chain sprocket: Some 15-25k (OE/aftermarket)

OE accessories for HD: endless options at absurd prices.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I asked here because I know that this is the only place where I can get genuine replies.

I know that the question I asked was really stupid but this is what I found on few of the website else I would have never

There were people saying things such as
Only very recent Ducatis have 12k mile valve services. And even then they are usually in the $1,000-$1,600 price range.
Anyways thanks a lot for your reply. I will go for HD Street bob

Labor charges abroad are too high. They charge you per hour. $ cannot hence be converted to INR directly.

Few points for this thread

• Fuel cost should be like driving a petrol car, so not much difference unless you are particular about 97 octane.
• Service costs varies from 7k to 15k, once in 6000kms - This is what I am told by Kawasaki.
• Tyres !! I guess this is the major expense.
• Sprockets , brake pads - Yet to experience.
• Accessories, depends on individual taste.
• Concentration and maturity while riding is important.
• Specially in cities, some idiot might want to cut through and bang on your bike and run away. Later, to fix the issue its a pain depending on the damage.
• Pot holes !! You can find it everywhere in India. Specially risky on highway where you don't expect them.
