  • Performance upgrade for enfield 500

I read about Hitchcock UK's (Hitchcocks Motorcycles -- Royal Enfield and Amal Parts and Kits) performance upgrade kits and it got me thinking - all that gear must be made in India somewhere. Anyone know the names of manufacturers/distributors in India that supply/stock the following parts:

    Main bearings - needle bearing
    Performance valve assemblies
    compression plates
    Light weight pushrods
    Free flow silencers
    High flow oil pump
    32mm Amal carb
    Uprated clutch springs
    High lift camshafts

    Any info is highly appreciated.

A stock 500 kick's ass of our current line up of so called power bikes...wonder how would a modded one would preform

i think you would have to fabricate a lot of parts yourself..finding even stock parts for my friends 500 was a pain in the rear...

anyways all the best with the enfield dude

Hi Modder, the Hitch cock parts are said to be maid in india and most of them are said to be made by SAMRAT... but i have done my home work on that and there is no info avaiable to where the parts are made. because samrat them self is working on the Metallurgy to get the standards rite . regarding the performance mods you can always contact Anthony in Bombay he know his stuff. and regarding the High flow pump the only one there is the 535 which i recently confirmed is bigger than the 350 and 500 (these both use the same). and it would be just for around 300 rs. a better option is to get the timming side moded so that you can fit a AVL timming cover where the Gears are used for the oil flow and it works out even fasted than the 535 and we are talking about the 350 AVL pump... free flow exaust are not to be a problem cause you dont really have to caculate for the bullet till the time you are into too much of high end modds. so just go for a normal free flow or you can also go for the goldstart, AMAL carbs i am sure that you can find one here but they would be old ones. and you can get the rebuild kits and all that

anyways best of luck if you are thingking of doing it and do keep psoting

Thanks Richard. Great advice Desideep. I'm going to look over your suggestions carefully and will let you know how things turn out. I've modded 3 enfields before - facing the head to increase compression, porting, re-jetting, free flow exhaust, etc - these do lead to a noticable increase in power, but I think the real difference will come if, in addition to this, I can replace the floating bush with a main bearing, add performance valves/rockers/pushrods/cams and ofcourse the replacement carb. Of course I haven't forgotten the aesthetic part - would like to style my new bike along the lines of a cafe racer (without doing any frame mods). Will post pics in around a month's time.
Samrat is a hard company to find on the net. I sent them an exquiry through IndiaeTrade.net. Seems like they are an
Ahmedabad-based company. Didn't find any Samrat distributors online, but I'll take your advice and ask at Anthony's in Bandra.
Again thanks for the advice and let me know if you have any other ideas and suggestions.

                Hi mate!

Hey man, Samrat is based in Ahmedabad, & I will give the number of Mr.GP Mistry, he's the owner of this company. These people don't have many retailers because they are mainly into export, & many products on Hitchcock's are from Samrat only. But in the past a few of their products haven't turned out to be very good, so beware, although they do say that they have improved. To quote an example, they had this rocker set, which was made from Aluminium, & used to have problems. Although they say that now they have corrected the flaws.

But I couldn't find much help from them, just fake promises that they would send the things etc.

As for the company in KB, whose link has been put up here, they have a lot to say on their website, but then like Deep says, don't really have such stuff. Stay away from them.

                Take care.

                Happy thumping,

Thanks dude. Checked out Ashiwin's page on ebay. His stuf is pretty high priced for the UK market. I'm not sure what sense it makes to order through ebay if it's available here anyway. Certainly wouldn't want to pay in pounds But the good news is that all that stuff truly is made here - hope I can find it.

Hey Blackfire. That's for the info. I got the same info as you about the samrat parts about their alloy rocker arm. BUt what else do they make? Would love to get my hands on their performance parts catalogue. Please pass on any contact details you have.

I have seen Samrat valves being peddled offshore too, but I honestly do not think most people need anything beyond free flowing filter, uppjetting, and an extractor type exhaust. Some head dimensions might have to be worked on the make sure the flow is not restricted there, at the most. Hotcams and hi-comp pistons and big bore kits are usually something people are not even going to exploit around here, given thepower an A500 makes with a stage-1 upgrade itself. The jetting, if done right, won't call for newer/better valves since the AFR is maintained.

Honestly, most motorcycles don't even churn out the basic 22bhp. Fixing the original faults itself make it pretty fast.

                            My 2 cents

Hey guys it's been a while since I posted last. But I've been busy as you will soon see. I've been working on putting together a cafe racer. Started with a 500cc bike with a shaved, ported head. The bike looked like this:

Since then I've stripped the bike and added a bunch of parts: fork top yoke with smith meter, Gold star silencer, new bend pipe, Cafe racer tank (chrome plated), rubber bellows, cafe racer seat, Thunderbird rear subframe, new rear fender, new front fender, new front fork with disc brake assembly, new BSA headlamp, 30mm Kiehin type Performance Flat-Slide Carb, IRC 100/19 rear tyre. This is how the bike looks now:

Still have a few tweaks to make on the cosmetic stuff, but I'm itching to work on some engine / performance mods. It's already got a shaved & ported head, 18T sprocket, flat-slide carb and free-flow exhaust. Any other ideas?
