    Hoo boy!!...

No offence or discouragement meant at all but that bike looks a real load of trouble man.. One can't really tell for sure from these pics but it looks like rust has eaten through just about everything.

The two most important things - frame and engine look to be compromised. You wont know until you open up the bore but the outside looks pretty rusted up. Check the frame completely to see whether its just surface rust. From here it looks like its been eaten through at places.

These are not the sort of things one should get tinkered. The mud guards, rims, even tank perhaps. But not the frame and engine.

If they aren't ok (and I hope for your sake they are) then you've got a real problem. You don't get original piston-cylinder kits any more. And if you do they cost a BOMB! The guys who have spares are enthusiasts who are unlikely to part with them.

It also appears that rust has gotten into the gearbox and the points system, not to mention the tank and the rims though (tank and rims are the least of your problems 'cos you can lay your hands on used ones albeit costing a bomb). Gearbox and points you might be able to get but you'll have to really wait it out and chase scrap dealers for it. Also, don't use aftermarket pipes. They really suck. Mufflers you can get local ones. Anyway, their purpose is only to keep the noise down.

I wouldn't advise a CDI. This is a classic bike not a commuter and you should try and keep it as such (when you get to that stage). I'm sure its possible to fit a CDI through Jugaad but jugaad on an old bike is never advisable.

Basically it looks like you're going to have to re-build the entire bike from scratch man. It may as well be a new bike for all practical purposes.

Did you get papers along with it?

As for the rear shocks not being original, I wouldn't say that. They look like they're just missing the cups. A 1970 would have the thicker shocks, just like the Yezdis which followed.

The rest has already been pointed out by sixspeedtwin. Though I must confess I didn't know the pipes were different

    Cheers

Very well written appraisal there, my friend. Could not have been summed up better.

      As for the Silencer Length,

For Jawa and Model B, the joint between silencer and bent pipe is right bellow the rider's foot rest.

For other yezdis, the joint is around 4 inches in front of the rider's foot rest.

              Hi Rahul,
              I thought..........You WROTE !!!
I have done many machines, worse then this....but as this is 353 Jawa, which is not that rare find ,at least in our country.( This doesn't mean like... Jawa as a cheap bike, at present condition, it must be scraped off!!)
The efforts & inputs you put in this project, doesn't really get you the desired result you expect at least like mind satisfaction.
If the owner has a point prove, by restoring this " For ever Bike....for ever Value"
Plenty of aspects to decided prior starting the project....
Though Rahul has pointed out many of the ASPECTS already...
Think by now the project is on the way...if he reveals the progress, we can at least suggest some thing to best our knowledge
              Cheers!!

@ Crankrd , sixspeedtwin & others who need the spare parts catalogue for
                JAWA 250cc model: 353/04.
Instead of sending " Hard copies " to every individual ( have done nearly a dozen times so far..)
Have made a pdf file of the catalog:
Guys who desperately need one, can get the stuff down loaded from the below link

@ many of our buddies, who were asking for hard copies, including "Crankrd",please get the catalog down loaded & make a hard copy of the same , apart from the expenses involved in copies ( nearly 60 pages), spiral bidding & postage at my end, this makes me tired at times.
Ride Safe!! ....Restore to your best!!.....Wish you all a Fantastic New Year !! (2001)
                Cheers!!

                  WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks ton Muthu!! This is great!!!!!! Really valuable for those of us trying DIY or even trying to source parts. Really helps keep an eye on the mechs who twiddle with our bikes to ensure they don't try any shortcuts or jugaad.

By any chance do you have workshop manuals for any of the Yezdis? Or any other parts catalogues?

Just trying my luck in case you do

                  Thanks again.

I think the Model B manual was available for download in jawaclub site before it crashed.

Have that one. Its the owner's manual not the workshop manual. Its also the same one sixspeedtwin has uploaded with his collection.

                      Workshop manual anyone?

                          Hello Buddy,
What are you going to SCAN????
Its just downloading from that rapidshare link, if your print is dull, there may some thing wrong with the printer or ink cartridge !!!
Even after converting the "PARTS Catalog" in pdf format & posting, you keep on asking for hard copies ( through telephone, even yesterday night)
Please try to understand the practical difficulties from my side !!!
You say that you don't have internet access at home, even same with me , its quiet simple ask your Cyber caf'e person to download the catalog for you, it will be less expensive also.
Please do not ask for hard copies & stuff, one can guide you in restoration project by suggestions only!!
No offense meant, plz do understand, when ever you come in line..you say : " I 'll pay for it,plz send it to me"
Till now for literature s like this I have not taken a single Rupee from any one...
& you think as if ,it is a easy joke to scan 62 pages, converting it in pdf file and then uploading it at public sharing sites to get the links
So plz can contact me by PM or mail ,it doesn't mean you should never call, as told I like chatting with like minded guys about Automobil'a, but not always

Ps: Some of our guys were talking about Work shop manuals, that is not possible in all cases , as some of the manuals ( not Jawa's) are protected by copy rights, by the publishers....so it can"t be posted at public forums
