  • Piston Bedding

    Hi Experts,

    I have a RE Classic 350..
I wanted to understand few terms..
    a) Can anyone explain me what is Piston bedding??
    b) My bike has completed 2800 kms, is it recommended that i rip the bike like 70, 80 k's on low gears.. does it help smoothing the bike's piston. so that it doesn't vibrate at top speeds...

Please assist me in becoming a better rider

              Never!

Always ride at the recommended speeds for each gear. 70 - 80 on low gears? I don't think thats even possible on less than 3rd (Classic owners feel free to correct me if I'm wrong..) let alone advisable. Besides, doing it like this simply increases stress on an engine. Let time take its course and let the piston and bore bed down on their own. Just ride sensibly and the bike will be fine.

RE always jerks on high gears in low speeds it cruises without any problem at 70-80 without any kind of turbulence from the engine. My advice would be not to rip it up while it is still a cherry you will regret it if your bore dies the first and second OS are a nightmare and it will never be the same. The jerkiness is a characteristic of the Royal Enfield

already answered by dafc!! but just make sure that the engine is not over stressed, does not jerk or knock. Dont try pulling the bike in a high gear at a low speed. Keep the bike in the right gear.

My offerings to the gods of speed -

                  - Yamaha RXZ 5 speed

His query was exactly the reverse - high speed (or highest possible I guess) in low gears not vice versa

                      Hi

Try reading the info at the link below. Should be helpful.

The Bullet: Mystries & Myths - Running-in a new Bullet

                      Especially these sections...

                      Point One:
Even if your bike has been used for YEARS in the city, say at 70Kmph max, DON'T try holding 120Kmph steady on the first interstate trip! Run-in the engine to 120Kmph first.

                      Point Two:
A suggested running-in method. Don't exceed 50Kmph for the first 1000Km. (OK, 3000 if you feel better that way) Then with engine warmed at 50Kmph, go to 60 and hold it for not more than half a minute. Do not repeat for at least 10 minutes (You can guess why, right ?) Repeat this process atleast 5 times before proceeding to next step, which is the same but holding time is one minute. Then repeat for 2min, 5min, 10min. This may have taken several days or weeks! Repeat this for 75, 95 and then 120 Kmph. NOW you can say your bike is run-in.
