  • First Cow down against my Enfield

I had a dog run into my front wheel when I had a Yamaha riding with my pillion at Thane - didn't fall, balanced it and rode on.

NOW PRESENTING - my first accident on my Royal Enfield !!!

A Cow ran and hit my Royal Enfield Bullet Motorcycle - didn't wait to see if it died because the villagers would lynch me to death.

As I see it - Villagers would not pay for my hospitalisation had I broken bones - so I see no obligation towards these b@$tard villagers who abandon their cattle on the State Highway.

I had no plans of going anywhere this weekend after 5 consecutive weekends of rides on my motorcycle.

Then all friends demanded I organise one more ride. 6th ride. I planned morning single day ride to nearby valley and back by noon.

Malshej Ghat is about 85 KMs from my home and is a State Highway.
I had gone there with friends to see the view in the valley in the chilling cold (for someone coming from the heat of Bombay city). It was cold windy and no hot sun even after 11 AM.

While going and coming back there were cattle by the roadside.

While returning at one point - there were a dozen cattle on the left side of the road.
All of them were standing still so I went carefully at 60 KMPH
Then a stupid Cow decided to charge at my Enfield Bullet.

The young cow rammed his head on my bike and hit the big Crash Guards (leg guard) on the left side. He came running from my left and hit me from the side - NOT MY FAULT AT ALL I would say.
The guard got bent and hit my shin (between knee and ankle).
I wobbled for a second and then continued straight on 2 wheels - straight as an arrow - as the weight of my Enfield kept me steady.

I rode on non stop till the city and found that my skin on the shin had a huge swelling. Like a Tennis ball inside my skin.
Since I could move and feel my ankle I knew it wasn't a fracture.

Went to a hospital anyways and got an X Ray.
All is well. The swelling is Blood Clot due to impact.

Chemists shops are closed in suburbs on Sunday.
So only ice and elevated feet was a solution till 8 AM Monday.

Kicked the crash guard back to shape.

Bad adventure which got my blood rushing faster than anytime I can remember. Due to the Adrenaline Rush I didn't feel the leg pain until I reached my waiting friends at Kalyan and they suggested checking me.

I am back in office on Tuesday

The rear crash guard you see was also bent on the left - so his head banged in the front and bounced at the rear guard as well - ONLY Noticed that on Monday when I went to the welding shop.

And yeah it felt great actually to stay on 2 wheels after that - I had slowed down on sighting those cattle grazing and maybe if I were faster and he got his aim I would have been worse.

AS I SAID - if I stopped I would be in deep mess - villagers are mobs of illiterate people - Don't know if the Cow died or not. The leg guard is thick metal and it bent completely to hit my shin - quite an impact.

    EXPENSES:
    1. Welding front and rear leg guard, straightening the metal - Rs 250
    2. Washing - Rs 50
    3. X Ray at Wockhardt Hospital - Rs 350
    4. Medication/ tablets - Rs 300

    5. Adventure of standing tall on the Iron Horse after a charging Cow hits you - Priceless

I MAY INDEED GO TO HELL - for injuring / killing a Cow but I will not be the only one - hopefully the owner of the stray cattle will be there in Hell before me and I will join there to Kick his Arse !!!

good that you came out of that incident with relatively less injuries...a cow bang can be destructive.
But on a lighter note - its not cow's (if it was a COW) fault at all, u see she has just seen a Bull and it ran towards it affectionately. so be proud of your bull...its dam attractive and loveable.
      Ride fast...ride safe

Damn! A light weight bike would be thrown clean due to impact. Lucky you got a Bull to ride. I ride through cow herds many times, but never before I thought such incident can occur. Damn, one more thing to watch out for!

Or it could be that the not so attractive cow thought it might have a chance with this not so attractive mechanized bull...

@2Write, you are very much true. Recently, around two months back, while we were coming from Nagarjuna Sagar, raghu (BOO) hit a cow (was directed on to the road by the sheperd) at 80kmph and the bike front has completely ruined and the cow received bruises. Later, the villagers gathered and started to exploit us asking the money for the whole cow. We said we will pay for the injuries of the cow and stayed there for the veternary doctor to come. After that many villagers gathered, and OMG, it was horrible. They tried to take the bike and eventhough the cow is much alive, the started demanding the full money for the cow (16000). The situation was getting worse, and thanks so much to Sumit, whose father is woking ins SP office. Through contacts, a police from nearest police station came and rescued us from the villagers and the settlement happened in the police station for 4000. It would have been a different case had sumit was not there with us. Some drunk villagers came with big sticks and knives.

You did the right thing by immediately fleding from the spot. Hope your recover soon buddy.

                      Hey Ravi,

I think these villagers do it deliberately to extort money from helpless travellers.

Do you think an ST bus will ever pay up for such accident ?

Those villagers are out to make money and more sinful than anyone else on the road - on a highway your 80 KMPH is completely acceptable - the villagers are not all that innocent as they seem.

And a village police will save their own skin by accepting Villagers' verdict - after all they have to live there - not us !!!

All this is one among other reasons why I stay within 50 to 75 KMPH on any and all roads in this corrupt country.

At villages I always come to 3rd gear.

But on an open road these idiots are not our liability.

                      HIGHWAY ROBBERY
One of my friend has been held up by robbers near villages many times in Maharashtra - he likes to ride alone without any group - every time he saved himself because he packs a sword under his riding jacket.

Stand up to a bully and even if you are outnumbered they will back off !!!

I don't have any weapons and don't want police problems - but I think at least a good stick is needed for me - don't want to end up as an anonymous dead body in some gutter .

You are true! Very good points there. It is what exactly happened in our case. Eventhough we had influence, we coughed up 4000 bucks as compensation. The SI himself told us that the villagers will take the money and enjoy the night with boozing. Not for the money, thank god, we were out of the situation very safely.

We generally will slow down at villages. The accident happened in the midst of a clear highway. The cow all of a sudden ran across the road as the shepered scared the cow on the road with a stick. Had BOO not worn DSG jacket, he would have been enjoying the hospital's hospitality by this time.

Cows and their handlers be damned..
my uncle told me of an incident where at 8pm on the highway they were on the suzuki 100cc 2 strokes at 60kmph when out of now where this guy herded 2 cows onto the road my uncle got thrown off and afell into bushes and was safe..but since they were in a group of 5 bikes they reigned supreme and got a 100 bucks as cmpensation...this was in the late 80s..now the bloody villagers gang up and we are forced to pay up inspite of being the victims becoz of the sheer bullying of ther might..
u did good thing and u may want to treasure that bike of urs for probably saving ur life..not many bikes can come out standing victorious after meeting with a cow..
Why is the man who invests all your money, called a broker?

Good to hear tat ur safe....i feel very sad for the cow hope it recovers soon if its alive....
most of the times its safe if u dont stop in these kind of situations....once had a very bad experience with my friend who crashed to a tvs-50 in some village he was on two wheels,he stopped to check whether the old man is fine in the meanwhile all the villagers gathered made us to pay hospital bills, hotel bills for them....made us to wait from morning 10.30am to 7pm...they even called a small panchayat made us sit in the middle and decided tat we have to pay 10k...but the old man was alright with minor bruises....luckily we were not manhandled also we got a bit of support from the youngsters there also a guy whose father was a politician in tat locality settled it and told us not to pay a singly penny...my friend gave his address and told them to come but no one came till now..happened 1yr ago...

I always feel like helping them but if u stop and go to help them they wil take u for a ride....so dont stop if its a crowded place but if its an empty stretch/night please stop and help them or no one would notice and maybe they will die....

atleast ,here in kerala cows are not so a problem.
But ,thanks to maneka gandhi ji ,the dogs are increasing like anything! I need to catch my KSRTC(kerala) Bus at 1AM and had to go with my Bull to leave it in pay and park mostly.
Then THese dogs in packs of 10,20 are coming from somewhere and chasing poor me . many times ,single dogs just jump infront of the Bullet. In the nights silence ,the Thump of the Bullet distracts them too much ?
before ,with fiero ,pulsar etc ,I dont had this problem.Dogs in groups are so dangerous! I would love to pack `em to Maneka Gandhi's House.so much for animal love that these stray dogs are biting people even in day time and unlike any other state ,here even in such a small town as mine got animal welfare organizations like "DAYA" who prevents the killings of these 4 legged human killers.

PS: and I hate dogs the most ;people - you get cats!they are better
