  • RX Big Bore Project

Hi guys ! Me and a friend of mine are in process of building a big bore out of an RXG. This is the first time I will be trying this out and I am pretty clueless about it. I know that there are a few guys here like Sunny (Sunmysore ) who have big bore setups so am looking for inputs from guys like you. Right now I have this vague idea of procuring a DT200 piston. The plan is to take the 132cc to 170cc. I have also heard of people using 65mm wiseco piston but our budget does not permit that - plus I am not a big fan of wisecos.

The project bike is an RXG with a 5 speed gearbox , stock electricals , stock airbox and a slightly port polished 4 speed bore on 1.25 oversize with a nice chamber. Since it would be difficult to procure original ART or even Goetze ( not Godzilla ) in 1.5 OS, we are thinking of getting a big bad piston and shoving it in :P

The plan is to get a bigger & better piston to take it to around 165cc - 170cc , port the bore , get a bigger carb on - maybe a Flatie or Kehien D slide. Cycle part plans are to run 17 inch alloys on R15 rubbers. Target power is huge amount on torque - a powerband that starts off early without a big flatspot before a violent powerband kicks in - do not want something too peaky but with all round power. The hope is that it will be a wheelie monster in the first three gears. I will be posting pics of our project once we start by next week. Will need you guys advise on pistons , connecting rods - and your own experiences with your big bore setups.

I own a nice street port RX myself. My setup is a mix n match one. It is 2003 model 4 speed - running a ported 4 speed bore , 5 speed malaysian close ratio transmission , a worked 5 speed head and a chamber on a Stock carb and airbox on 90/100 electricals. Its a little peaky - and the front comes up in the 1st two gears - I have alot of fun on it. I hope that the big bore that we build will be twice as much as fun !! Looking forward to your inputs on parts, tips and what expect from this ! Thanx guys !

Hi Karthik ! I have no clue on manufacturers of DT200 pistons or even pistons sizes in mm, but i do have friend who can source them for me. I spoke to SunnyMysore and I think I will have to use an RD350 piston. He recommended an ART - I hope to get away with a square port TKRJ piston. Another option is to go short stroke. What do you think ?

i am not qualified enough to advice but couldn't resist...
don't go short stroke, engine will be hard to tune, either use same stroke or offset it 2mm outwards(thats 4mm increment in stroke length), you will need to use some fatter base gasket in 2nd case, but increment in cc will be much more fun+with options of more tuning.....

Are you aware that you will be needing to re-sleeve the cylinder?

Sourcing imported pistons like Wiseco or Prox are not big deal for me, but i dont want to go beyond 60mm. I need a really fast & reliable setup & re-sleeve job IMHO is good for races, but not for Highway rides.

Sunnyboi, is using an RZ350 piston & not of RD350.

ART piston kit for RD350 is next to impossible to find. You can try sourcing Banshee piston kit. But at the end, what is the reliability of you bike? No doubt the piston like ART or Wiseco are the best, but what about the crappy re-sleeve job? Think about it.

Also piston kit alone will not suffice, what plans do you have for connecting rod, Clutch Plates, Transmission? Everything has to gel together perfectly to get the real orgasm.

And FYI, DT175 or DT200 piston will not fit an RX block, no matter what. That why people choose the RD or RZ piston. Both are indeed 175cc w.r.t displacement, but the Bore x Stroke values are different.

              Me neither.

I agree with your points here. But what are your inputs on re-sleeve?

re-sleeving is must in case of bigger piston and yes the work done by sleeve guy will be as usual "crappy" unless he really knows what he is doing,
60mm piston will hike the cc close to 140,compression ratio will go up,

Yes, it is this crappy unreliable work that has prevented me from going Big-Bore. I am more than happy with what my 140cc does.

sleeve was done by a friend of me, i won't say best job but much better then others,
arranging other parts is being the toughest part till now, (:

You'd have to weld one of these onto the RX crankcase I guess

these are way too awesome to fit rx crank cases or its barrel
