  • Samurai - Boosting Mileage and/or Performance

I have a 1999 model Green Suzuki Samurai. Was used very carefully and sedately by my dad from 1999 to 2011 and I started using it at the start of 2012. Its completely stock and since it was my dad's office commute, it did not clock too many kilometers from 1999 to 2011 - totaled around 33k on the odo when I started using it; while now its already 38.5k (since I ride min 60km daily).

Have serious issues with its mileage. Samurai was supposed to be a mileage 2-stroker, delivering around 60 kmpl, while mine under very very careful riding gives 47 and under normal riding gives 42 and ripping 37. Its a heavy drinker.

What needs to be fixed to get normal mileage of around 60 from this bike ?

I also wish to do something about its performance. Its a low revving bike (max power 7.49BHP @ 5500 RPM) but if something can be done to make it faster or pull better it would be great. Current top speed tested on Electronics City flyover is 85 and the whole bike vibrates like crazy at that speed and refuses to go faster.

My budget is small, around 5k so if I have to choose between mileage and performance I choose mileage since this is my daily commute.

PS: if it helps, I'm from Bangalore.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Check the engines compression. When was the carb. cleaned ? How does the clutch feel? You budget is i bit less. Labour and spares rates have gone up . Get hold of a good reputed mech. who'll have a look at it or let me know if u cant find one.

How do you check the engine compression ?

Carb was cleaned when the bike was given for service around 9 months back.

Clutch is normal. I do not "ride the clutch". Recently got the cable adjusted as well.

Gearbox Oil and 2-T oil both updated a week back.

When given for service, a particular issue was fixed - the bike used to stall a lot and acceleration was hopeless and top speed was low. Apparently choke cable was stretched too much so bike was running on choke ALL THE TIME . I fixed it and now top speed back to 85 and acceleration, pickup and everything else are normal.

About budget, Samurai's spares are still easily available right ? It shares everything with MAX100. How much more do I have to shell out ? I hope for fixing the mileage issue alone this budget is sufficient.

And yeah, please suggest some good mechanics in Bangalore.

Even Max100 spares are difficult to find these days. Forget Samurais body parts etc. Mileage will go down if parts get worn. If u can go to JC road area, ill send u a mechs. number.

Any other area apart from JC road ? I always tend to get lost in the labyrinth of one-ways and small roads circling the same place.

But yeah do send me his number/address. Any idea what it will cost to atleast get an initial examination of the bike done to spot the problem ? From there I think I'll be able to proceed more carefully while managing my economic resources

As far as Samurai's body parts go, I don't have a problem with that. Body is in pristine condition if you ignore the dirt collected here and there. Paint and stickering is completely intact.

Among the parts of a bike, what affect the mileage when worn out ?

Urgent: Recommend front and rear tyres

I'm getting the bike serviced soon and both tyres need changing. Recommend something that has lots of grip (current tyres skid a lot) and has a long life. Planning to go easy on the wallet
