Re: RD350 - Restoration - Givng it a heart transplant

    Sorry for the late reply,

dont go for Boyseen reeds, they are good no doubt but the question is how long will they last ???? just go for the YZF ones, I had them installed on my friends bike really good no problem yet, also its a genuine part from Yamaha .

Points - really a pain to get original ones / good ones , even in UK & US its flooded with desi duplicate stuff . try US ebay for points some sellers do have NOS(new old stuff) for sale just go for it a bit expensive ( but worth the money) .try to see the seller has two points or more as it helps to save in shipping.

Silencers - another headache, I really dont know how the local make perform & the cost , but I have seen some pic's online they look an exact replica, yes US ones have been used on friends bike they look bit diff but expensive & good. But the US headers cant be used on Indian RD's , If you have someone flying down from US then try to get a decent pair.

    ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

Carb Needles- they are many carb rebuilt kits available online , but not worth , the best bet is to get used carbs ( specially from US/UK/Aus) which are not fiddled much .also beware the carbs are different as there various models of RD , (ex RD 400 came in A, B, C, D-daytona)

      A. They do sell the Boysean ones (just the reeds). Would that be a better idea?
      B. Any idea where I could get the better points. ( Got a few sets way back in 2005 and they worked great). The ones locally available now, are worthless.
      C. Exhausts that they sell are freaking expensive and local copies are not worth IMO. Do you think the stock Indian ones suffice?

Insted of boysean, try to get yamaha yz fiber reeds, I am using them. They are pretty good. Quality points are almost impossible to get now, Its wiser to either switch to a tci set up or get a electronic iginition system(cdi). There are very good replica exhausts available in India for a reasonable price. Insted of using worn out old exhausts they are a better choice.

Try to contact Dr. Nitesh patidar(xbhp id: yamdoot). He would be able to help you with the needles.

Getting us or uk carbs is good IF you get cables with them. Because they are short top carbs so Indian cables wont fit. Make sure you get a rd350 set. Other carbs would have simillar venturi but different internals and you would have to look for a rebuild kit to fix them anyhow.

        1. For the reeds which YZF are you both talking about?
        2. As for points, will hunt on Ebay for the same. I have had her on points and would like to hunt for 'em even if they are a bit expensive.
        3. Thanks for the info on headers. Will definitely add them to the list.

Not yzf, yz125/250 reeds. Points, regardles of quality will always be more bothersome and unreliable than its electronic counterparts.

For exhausts, you can contact mr. Rajdip fadikar from kolkata. He is a genuine genius who makes replica parts for Rd, like mudguards, chain cover, exhausts etc. For him its a hobby. His workmanship is exemplary as he is a contracted engineer in HAL.

I am running on a rdd cdi ignition system. Its pretty hard to get now and is very expensive. Nippon made oe tci kits are available in the market, again, it isnt cheap. The most cost effective and reliable option is to go for a autoescorts point replacement tci kit. Its fairly cheap and gives point like, if not better performance than points and is hassle free unlike points.

            Contact dr. Patidar on facebook.

Bullet 500's vm28 may have the same venturi, but the jets, bleed tube(atomiser/imulsion tube), slide cutaway and needle are different.

Bibhu I can't comment on whether it is for single cylinder or multi cylinder engines, because there is nothing mentioned on this regard.

                        Hi All,

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. Need your inputs on a few more things -

                        1. Tires -

Recently got a Duke 390 and the grip her tires is astonishing. I would like to put the same tires on the RD (They are really expensive!!!) but would not want to go for the mag wheels and retain her on spokes (more classy I believe).

Does anyone know if there are tubeless spoke rims available anywhere in the 17" size or anyone done the rim conversion thing..Seen a couple of videos on Youtube and a few forums and people have done it. However, I'm still a bit sceptical.

                        2. Swingarm -
RD really doens't like bigger tires. Once tried to put a 120/80 Dunlup on her but there wasn't any space in the swing-arm. I would still want to retain the two separate shocks and was planning to go for the Karizma or the P220 one. Will these swing-arms be strong enough.

                        3. Front forks and disc brakes - I would like to put stronger forks and have narrowed down to the Duke 200 one (available for 12K in Pune). However, the Duke 200's brakes do not have ABS. Will the 390 one be a direct fit?

                        Cheers,

Spares from the US are yet to be ordered. Never owned credit cards so cant order myself. Getting a relative to do it for me. So getting the financial arrangement finalized.

For now, I've decided to get all the cosmetics, brakes, fork etc in order. The engine re-build can be done in a few days once the spares arrive. No harm enjoying a decked-up HT!!

use FZ or P220 forks ,wheels and brakes so that you won't have issues with parts to some extent
