  • Yezdi CL II (1987) - Restoration - Hades rises from the ashes..again!!

A brief background...I owned a Yezdi Classic aka HADES ( 1985 model) between 2006 - 2008 that was completely restored to the original spec. In 2008, I left for abroad and kept it in the care of my mechanic. He's from the same neighborhood that I lived and knows me since childhood. So entrusting him with taking care of my darlings was a no-brainer.

At that time, I had an RD350 ( Cupid), Hades and my old and trusted Hero Honda CBZ. I had also bought a 1962 G2 Bullet but never told my dad about it. In a sense... I turned into a grease monkey with all the bikes and this was starting to get on my dad's nerves.

One day, my dad saw me riding the G2 and he was really pissed. He personally loves the Bullet and somethat tolerates the RD.But he hates Yezdi as someone really close to him died riding a Yezdi.

So..as soon as I left, my Hades was sold of for a pittance of 11K(The original Halla (made in spain) horns itself cost me some 1400Rs a pair).
The was fully restored, running on 1st oversize pistons with a complete engine rebuild.

In 2011, I got a call from my mechanic that he has found a really nice Yezdi CL II still with the first owner that had been used only for office commute. So I jumped the gun and told him to buy it. She still had the original paint job and the engine being in excellent condition.

The only thing that I told him after procuring the bike was to do a complete engine rebuild. Being a Yezdi lover himself ( The guy used to race on Yezdis), the engine was completely rebuilt with all or most of the parts replaced.

    Specs from the engine rebuild.

    1. A new High-Power block piston set of STD Size was put on. ( She was running on 4th OS pistons when we bought her)
    2. A completely new OEM and never used crank was put.
    3. A new gearbox
    4. Diamond FIT-TIGHT clutch chain.
    5. A host of other engine parts were completely replaced with new ones.
    5. New MB clutch plates.
    6. Full Synthetic oil.

After I landed returned back in July this year, I kept riding Hades in the same condition till I sourced some parts. Parts missing or somewhat non functional were -
    1. Chain Cover
    2. Head-light assembly.
    3. Sprocket kit.
    4. A new battery and a wiring harness.
    5. A very badly dented front mudguard.
    6. Some rusting on the rear fender.
    7. Petrol tank top was of the lock king. I prefer the plain one which has Yezdi written on it and the fuel mixture.
    8. Missing tail-lamp.
    9. Missing rear reflector.
    10. A rusted seat.
    11. Non functional rear shockups.
    12. One leaking front shockup.
    13. A missing half chain-cover.
    14. One drum had a big gap and the front brakes were non-existant.
    15. Front chrome drum plate.
    16. Worn out Rear break liners.
    17. Bald front tyre.

So between July and September, I kept hunting for parts in Pune, Ahmednagar and Aurangabad and managed to find almost all the things I needed.

    Parts Sourced from Pune.
    1. Yezdi Petrol tank cover ( the one without the lock).
    2. Two drums.
    3. All cables ( Brake, clutch, accelerator, Kilometer chain).
    4. Gudgoen Pins (Standard to OS sizes).
    5. Wiring Harness.
    6. Front Drum plates.
    7. Break liners.
    8. Side stand.
    9. Kick and Break shafts.
    10. A new meter and meter harness.
    11. Swastik - leg guard.
    12. A new set of Bend pipes.
    13. Points ( HT)
    14. IPL pistons ( 1st and 2nd oversize).
    15. Gabriel rear shocks ( was very very very lucky top get these!!!)
    16. A chain cover.
    17. MRF 3.25 16" tyres
    18. Tyre tubes.

    Parts sourced from Ahmednagar -
    1. HT points
    2. Handle T.
    3. Nuts for the tee.
    4. Bigun pins ( from standard size to size 6 from MB and Nippin).
    5. MK clutch plates.
    6. Mikarb jets.
    7. Petrol Tank rubbers.
    8. CL - II monograms.
    9. Rolan sprocket kit.

    Parts sourced from Auraganbad.
    1. Half Chain Cover
    2. Amaron Rider ( 5 AMP battery).
    3. Halla horns ( Made in spain onces- found this a bit tough).
    4. Bought parts of a Yezdi(Being scrapped) for 4k for its body work namely the petrol tank, mudguards, shock up spring covers, tail-lamp bracket.
    7. A race throttle.
    8. Yamaha Yolk levers and Yamaha RX135 (4 speed) switch assembly from Minda.
    9. Karizma Indicators ( white color ones).
    10. A cigarette lightger.

After going through the forums, I came across Sprocketing. Hades is going to have a sprocket configuration of 48T/18T (2.6667) instead of the default 46T/19T (2.4210). This results in a 10% increase which I think is acceptable.

    Restoration Timeline
    October 1st -Paint scheme
1.Engine - The entire engine would be painted black
    2. Silencers - The silences are being painted mud-black as they were a bit banged up and it did not make sense to have them chrome-plated as all their imperfections would stand out.
    3. Petrol Tank, front and rear fenders, shockup pipes, size panels and tail lamp bracket - Going to be painted as MISTY SILVER GREY ( took the idea from the P220.)
    4. Minor parts are being chrome plated.
    5. Chasis, drums, shockup pipes, air box filter cover - Would be painted black.

All the parts to be painte

    October 2nd - October 4th.
    1. Paint procured.
    2. All minor parts have been sent for chrome plating. These include bend pipes, rims, spokes, handlebar, side-stand,calipers, drum plates.
    3. All the parts that are to be painted have been scrubbed and cleaned completely for the paint job. Removing the original paint was a big pain in the behind..it just wouldn't come off.
    4. The chasis and all the parts to be painted have had a layer of primer put on them. The engine as well has been primered.

    October 5th -
    1. Chasis, airbox filter cover, drums, shockup pipes, engine have been painted black with 2 coats of lacquer put on them.
    2. Silences have been painted mud black.
    3. Engine has been painted except and lacquered(except for the cylinders).
    4. The engine head and the carburettor cover have been painted silver.

    October 6th - 8th

The petrol tank, front and rear fenders, tail lamp bracket, shockup pipes, size panels would have an initial coat of silver paint, followed by the MISTY SILVER GREY paint and 2 sets of lacquer. The stuff would be left to dry for a couple of days as its been raining quite a lot here.

October 9th - Final bike assembly

    October 10th -
1.First ride after HADES has been restored.
    2. A lot of pictures taken
    3. Pictures put on this thread.

I know its a lot to read...but I really love by HADES and wanted to share the joy of restoring it with you guys.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Here are some pics before the restoration. Unfortunately, I didn't take a lot of pictures..but here are a few.

I went to a Bajaj showroom to take some pictures of the P220 and find some broken cosmetic part, to get Hades paint right.
After speaking to a service center guy, I was informed that there are 3 different shades of silver in the Pulsars.

Lets hope, I get the P220 paint right.

                Need help with the Paint...

My restoration is running a bit late...still cant seem to figure out the paint right.

The paint scheme that I had decided for the bike was -
                A) The engine and chassis, drums, airbox filter body,swing-arm, silencers would all be painted black - This part has been done.
                B) The Petrol tank, front and rear fenders, side panels, shockup pipes, tail-lamp brackets, head-light mound to be painted the P220 silver shade - yconfused.

My idea of the grey paint was it it should have a bit of a dual shade..looking silver from afar and looking a bit grey from close by. That what got me looking at the P220.

Urfortunately, the Pulsars have 3 shades of silver/grey and finding a grey 220 is getting to be a bit tough.I searched the net and the forums and came to find some of these pics. Could you be kind enough to have a look and give me some pointers.

Moreover, the petrol-tank and everything to be painted grey has been primered. Should I have an undercoat of a silver paint, before the actual color gets put on? The painter suggested me this...and I was not sure on this one. Would a coat of PS-Grey suffice?

Regarding my earlier post, I've decided to color the bike with Dupont "Steel Mist". The color looks neat and I hope it would look good.

The bike has got delayed by one whole week. Here's the progress made so far -

                  1. Engine, chassis, engine covers, airbox filter, drums, shockup pipes, tail lamp assembly, carb cover have been painted and lacquered. These parts look pretty awesome I had got them painted Dupont black with 2 coats of lacquer.
                  2. Head has been painted the steel mist color. The block has just been painted black with no lacquer.

                  3. Except for the fuel tank, everything else has been dented and primered. The mudguards that came with the bike were pretty banged up and rusted. After an initial attempt to put them in shape, we decided after wasting two days that putting on the ones from the scrap bike that I had got earlier would be a better option. All of these are being painted with an initial coat of silver today.

                  Reason for delays -
                  1. The electroplater is running a week late and hopefully my stuff should arrive by Monday (keeping my fingers crossed).

                  2. My front shockup spring covers ends were a bit rusted at the ends and were not up to my liking even after the paint. So, sourced them again from my scrap bike. These would be going in for paint today.

                  3. The bend-pipe and the silences are joined by a piece of rubber. I've always had the problem with the rubber hardening or leaking after some time. The aftermarket stuff that you get out here, the rubber is very hard and starts to leak in a few months. So this time I've decided to ditch them and install Yamaha RX and RD type nuts on the silencers. The nuts are currently being fabricated and I would be getting them on Monday.

                  4. Each side of my petrol tank a nut broken off where the Yezdi monogram fits. Tried a lot of things to get the buggy things out but they won’t just budge. Finally, I've decided to take them to a lathe shop and get them drilled professionally.

So...everything has been pushed to next week. Let’s hope we actually make some progress.

                  Cheers,
                  Sohaibak

                      Hades - Final build - Day 1

Finally...after a month...the bike assembly has finally started

                      Stuff done today -
                      1. Took the bike to get the radium stripes done on the petrol tank and the side panels. Decided to go with black (original is red), as I think this goes more with the bikes paint scheme.
                      2. Put the stuff for lacquer and finally got a chance to scream at the painter for delaying my bike so much(ofcourse after all stuff was painted).
                      3. Started assembly around 7pm and continued till 11pm.

                      Small issues,
                      1. The bike's original rear mudguard was really messed up and rusted. So painted the one from the spare bike. One of the fitting holes didn't match..so was biting my nails off, when the mechanic ran a drill to adjust it.
                      2. The front drum chrome plate that I got from Pune didn't fit properly on the drum. So had to work on it a bit.
                      3. My petrol tank top was missed in the chrome..and now I've decided to paint it black. This will be going in for black paint and then lacquer tomorrow.
                      4. The seat looks a bit thick and will be shaved off a bit. A new seat cover also needs to be put on.

Well the rest..will figure out tomorrow. For now here are some pics.

P.S - Please ignore my mechanic's posing a pic. The guy was a professional body builder and can't help himself.
                      Cheers,
                      Sohaibak

My cell phone died in the afternoon and I did'nt have a charger on me. Did manage to get a few pics in before my battery ran out.

Well... I thought I would finally get to ride her today, but my mechanic was under the weather. Some viral flue is sweeping across Aurangabad.
                            Today's updates -
                            1. The wiring and electricals were done.
                            2. The petrol tank top was painted and got it in the afternoon.
                            3. The rear mudguard was drilled and fitted.
                            4. The clutch-plates and the clutch chain were changed.
                            5. Motul 300V was put in the engine and the carb was tuned.
                            6. The bulb from my earlier headlight was of a different kind and we found that around 9pm when all the shops already closed. Will buy the bulb tomorrow.
                            7. Personally I don't like the traditional turn indicators on an Yezdi. To circumvent this, I had to decided to paste a small section of the LED strips available and stick them on the front and rear number plates. The led strip was cut accordingly and then wired.
                            8. The flasher that I had purchased, didn't work properly. So will be replacing this piece and fitting it tomorrow.
                            9. The horns, pilot lamps, tail-lamps,CLII monograms were fitted today.
10.The seat work was not done as the seat shop was closed. The cushion has been sliced off by 3/4th of an inch and a cover will be put on tomorrow. Will also get HADES written on the rear of the seat.
11.The carb cover was again missed in the paint job ..and will be going for paint tomorrow.

12.A cigerette lighter will also be put on the bike, hopefully tomorrow. As its not water-proof, a small metal box with a lid would be fitted somewhere on the bike.As of now, I've got two places in mind but haven't figured it out completely. The places are -
                            a) Between the speedometer and the ignition switch.
                            b) Under the tank.

                            Thats about it for now.

                            Cheers,

Cigarette lighter is something we dont always see. I dont want to encourage smoking but its an interesting thought process. What made you think of it?
