  • Yamaha RD 350

    Hello Friends,

I m Amar Pradhan from Pune and new to this site.
I met with an accident few years back due to which i avoided driving RD 350 ( 1983 model ) . Now that i m fine with the grace of god i m planning to ride my RD350 . But my bike condition now is lil bad as i didnt even started the engine all this 5 years.

I am planning to give it a new look, there is lot of work needed to be done on it coz its rusted too.

I wanted to know who is the best machanic for RD350 in Pune who loves to work with RD.
Also i wanted RD350 owners Handbook and workshop Manual

So please let me know if u can help me out to find a good mechanic n the manuals.

    Appriciate u all.

    Amar Pradhan..

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Hi..good to hear that your fine.

Most of the people in Pune..take their RD to Jatin Bhapkar. Some of the other members can give you his contact details.

Can you please post some pics of the bike.

      Cheers,

He has a notorious reputation of ripping RD owners. If a mech. with so many years of experience with RDs can still make a 2X1 expansion chamber for them, one can imagine what kind of a mech. he would be.

The guy was asking for a mech in Pune.. and I came to know about him through XBHP.
Personally,I've never had an experience with him and never taken my RD there.

If you are willing to get bike done in Aurangbad..let me know. He has worked on all my bikes and is really good.

          Cheers,

Workshop manual and handbook are available as soft copies in this section's stickys. Download them.

Before you give your RD to any mechanic,I implore you to please read and understand the basic operations of RD, because mechanics have some weird ideas about fixing old machines like the RD. It is better to oversee the build with the understanding of basic two stroke operation rather than leaving it completely in the hands of a stranger.

Took my bike to Jatin Bhapkar today,
Not going to do ne modification except CDI unit, driving on point does give an extra boost but lot too much painful if the battery gets discharged.
He said no work required for the engine n its in good condition. First mechanic to give a positiive feedback.
Going to paint it metalic bottel green dark shed.

              Hope it will look nice.

I would advise you to keep the bike on points. Just make sure the battery charger is good. The RD is much more peppy on points. I have my RD on points since I got her some 8 years back. Trust me, I haven't had too many problems.

CDIs are definitely easy to maintain and there are some performance CDIs available too. Maybe, other senioir members can shed more light on that.

Points do have an advantage at lower rpms as they supply longer spark at lower revs. Provided that points are good quality along with the cam and condensers As the revs rise however limitations of points begin to show. Since points are mechanical they do not work properly as revs rise and tend to float, which basically means that points will be unable to break contact in order to let the circuit collapse and discharge the coil, which in turn restricts the revving of the engine. Not to mention, points need constant adjustments every 500kms or so. Once the points move, timing of the bike is off and performance takes a hit.

A proper CDI, on the other hand, gives proper voltage and steady spark through the rev range resulting in better combustion and increases engine life. Since CDI is an electronic device it doesn't need constant adjustment. You time the bike once and you are set.

Mind you, desi jugad cdi systems using 100 cc parts are not good for your RD. You are better off on points.

What CDI system are you switiching to?
A good viable and affordable solution is the autoescorts points replacement system.

If you can find proper cdi systems like ravi nagesh or the rdd kit, it will be better but both are out of production.

Sorry man, I am about 1800 kms from Pune.

However I would like to know some more details about this CDI unit. Can you tell me more?

Can you throw some light about what his CDI is about and the components it uses? Starting in one kick is not difficult. making the RD run like an RD should is the most difficult part. Unfortunately most of the RD guys dont really know what a real RD is like. They are just happy they got rid of points and that it starts everytime. Thats what the definition of a reliable RD is left now.

Today i m going to meet him again to select the colour for my bike and i guess i will paint it Dark Metallic Bottel Green, Deep Metallic Nevy Blue or Metallic Dolphin Grey. Also lil confused if i should colour Black .... lol
