• [Photo Feature]: Silver Lightning - 88 RX100 Rebuild

I grew up riding two strokes, it being my Dad's scooter, my Uncle's Yezdi Roadking and among all my favorite 93 RX100 owned by my cousin which I use to get occasionally after school for a joy ride around my neighborhood. When it was my turn after 12th standard to get one my dad was strictly against RX100 primarily 1) it is not fuel efficient and 2) Rigid about always buying a brand new vehicle, RX100 was not available as NEW and due to which I ended up riding a brand new HH Splendor during my engineering. Well was not too happy riding a bike which had barely half the power that RX had. I got busy with college, moving abroad for further studies and finally settling there.
I happen to got an opportunity for a short term travel project in India and you know what I wanted the most as soon as I landed, out of all the muscular plastic bikes out here that can only Purr like a kitten, I was looking for the bike that roars Yamaha RX 100.

Search & Tryst
I started looking for a bike that needed lot of TLC, so that I can give it all that it deserves. After a couple of weeks of search in Hyderabad, I managed to find a 1988 RX100, set an appointment and after few delays eventually we met after dusk so it got dark. I got there and waited eagerly for the first sight of the bike and then out in the dark on a dim lighted street I could hear unmistakable exhaust note. My eyes got locked on the bike and two college kids arrived with the bike and the sound was mesmerizing, after few moments I started inspecting the bike and kept smiling as I kept hearing the beautiful and original note that conveyed the health of engine running on original G4 bore, I overlooked all the defects such as the badly bent forks, bad paint job, cheap seat, rusty rims and bald tires. I made a deal, paid the monies, riding back home and I could not stop wearing a grin all the way.

Introducing it to my family
My Dad was not too happy looking at an old bike and then he recognized it was the same bike I wanted 15 years back and he congratulated and said "Do not spend too much money on it". I nodded but I knew what I wanted. My mom was happy that I found the bike I always talk about but never had it. My wife was glad, as it has been years we both had a ride on a motorcycle and for my two little girls riding a bike is a foreign thing. I took them for a short ride, as maneuvering with badly bent forks was not easy.

Congrats on finally getting your dream motorcycle

The bike is really good. You are a really patient man, to wait 15 years to live your dream. Hats off. The bike is looking good, except the metre console which seems to be protruding too far forward in the last photo. Maybe it's just the camera angle!

Thanks for the appreciation.
kb100, I know it is bought off the shelve and not custom made, I will check with my bikes mechanic for more info. But if you are interested in buying it I suggest calling these folks

Shah Motor Cycle House, Ramkote, Hyd. Not sure about posting ph# on this forum. Any way just dial should be able to get you their ph# easily.

Bike looks hot ! welcome to the RX club my friend I bought an RX just to see what the hype is all about, never ridden one before getting mine, so was not expecting much from the tiny 100cc bike, but I was completely wrong! Yes, bike is actually very slow by today's measure, but riding an RX to its limits is the one of the most soulful experience one could have on a bike!

speedo looks cool(slight modification would be good), but does the tacho-meter work properly?

@giridhar, Thanks!. Yes the tacho works, I am no expert but it seems to respond well as engine is revved. I like to keep it above 3500 RPM and the bike is a real screamer. I agree its not fast but its quick! and gives a run for money for many 150cc 4-strokers out there on the city streets.

Thanks for your comments, its personally very rewarding to find people who share the common passion, appreciate and share their thoughts. I will check with my bike builder if the speedo placement was on purpose or just some standard fixture. From looking sideways, I think it is aligned with headlight and pushing it towards the tank might make head light stick out.
@Myride, the tire size is 3.25-16 and the brand is "Shikara". I remember the builder told me he is not able to find CEAT brand yezdi tire.
@kiranby, Thanks, not at the moment to my RX. I am on hunt for my next favorite, Yezdi Roadking. Planning on making a scrambler out of it

Immu true branded 16" are rare sight in the market now. So we are left with non branded tyres for that size. By the way a scrambler with an yezdi is little on the heavier side but then again it's your choice. Good luck with your hunt.

Congratulations on getting your dream bike....

Yamaha Rx-100 is definitely the bike that ROARS......

Get this bike fully ported after some time, with k&n air filter, bigger carbs, rejetting, expansion chambers,,,,
and you will be faster than all other current bikes on the road even today, except YAMAHA RD350 and KTM RC 390...

However, in aural statement, you will beat even KTM RC 390....... only Yamaha RD 350 will sound better than your rx-100

immuRD :- Congrats! Bike looks stunning. I would just suggest you to keep this as stock. There will be many recommendations to go for port job, EC etc so you could go drag with other bikes. Truely speaking they are not worth the chase. Other bikes would run in stock condition whereas you would be porting heavily and the engine don't last much. Oh yes, if money is not issue, we could turn this whole world into a circus to our amusement.
