Re: Silver Lightning - 88 RX100 Rebuild

I am sorry sir, if I have given a wrong advice,

I just wanted my friend's Rx should not stay behind current crop of bikes. In 1980's and 90's, there was no competition for Rx-100, but in 2015, there are bikes, that can leave Rx behind. So, I just wanted my friend's Rx should stay in front. Even I know the cost of modifications, I was just giving my view.

Thank you all for best wishes on Roadking hunt. Because of work and travelling could not seal the deal on a Roadking that I am negotiating on, hopefully this weekend I might get lucky ones more.
portedyammie, not a problem buddy. I know how every RX lover feels about the new competition, but RX has nothing to prove. It is a legend and always will be roaring on the streets of our great country . I like the engine as it is made by the brilliant Yamaha engineers simple, reliable and packs enough punch to knock out even the modern plastic fairies. Actually I am planning to buy OEM bore and Piston for RX100 and keep it for later years when my current G4 bore running a 50.25 mm piston wears out. Thanks!

hi immuRD,

you are absoleutly right brother, Rx-100 doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. Its the greatest bike ever produced in India and one of the greatest in the world ever.
Its quality, reliability, and user-friendly nature is legendary. Its great to hear that you are planning for the original bore and piston. Its the bike for generations. You can even give it to your son later.
Fashions( 4-stroke newbies ) will come and go..... But trendsetter(Rx-100) will always remain forever.

After a lot of looking around for a Roadking that needs rebuild/restoration, I bought a 1980 Road king that needs loads of TLC. It barely starts and as you can see there is no seat to even take a test ride. Currently working on the design concept sketch, goal is to have a good looking scrambler(..& modern electricals), with a great performing engine(possibly make 18+ HP) and has enough stopping power (disc brakes) that can tame the beast when needed and keep the rider in one piece. Thanks and wish me luck.

RD front end swap is a very common mod in RKs and CL250 to improve front braking, Disk without power would be an overkill, disk brakes kill the looks and the worst thing is they lockup.

I have converted my RD to Disk brakes and I am facing lockups, hoping they will be fixed after a few Kms.

@yam, thanks Pramod for sharing your two cents about Fork assembly mod and I am sorry to hear about the issue with discs on your RD. I envy your ride, back in 2007 when I had a chance to buy a RD I thought otherwise and still regret.

Well Roadking will not be as fast as some of the newbies entering Indian market, but as you know two strokes climb the speeds with great rush than 4 Stroke and in our traffic conditions where you immediately need to brake & stop for every other odd *dio* who wants to go left from the right most lane I feel discs help here better than drum. Also, I am very happy with the front Disc setup on my RX100 that makes me feel confident about this setup and I have seen many vintage bikes in US sporting a disc, may be that is the reason I do not consider disc as an anti-vintage element.

I do not know the configuration of the rebuild yet, but will start a new thread once it starts.

Thank Y'all for reading my posts.. and keep them roaring

I had to say bye to my Silver lightning for now and leave abroad. Yezdi Roadking project has not started yet but plan to get it complete in the coming months and have it ready for my next trip to India in 2016 summer

Oops! That's a sad news. Specially after reading about the effort you had put in after your machine. Never mind, life goes on!

Sorry to say but you ruined a good bike with the mods. You should have left it stock.
