  • Purchased a Suzuk Shogun recently.

So I purchased a '96 Suzuki Shogun recently. Thing is I don't really know much about bikes. I bought it simply to fulfil a childhood dream of mine. After buying it for INR 28,000, I feel like I might have overpaid for it.

The bike seemed to be working fine before buying, but now two weeks later, it is giving me trouble. Starting is often a problem. It has already been to the mechanic some five times since the purchase. The last time he changed the choke wiring, but the bike only functioned for a day before the troubles arose once again.

I live in Madras. If y'all could suggest a good mechanic to look at the bike, it would be great. I also need to buy a new side panel and an indicator. The mechanic asked me to get a new kicker as well. Where do I find them in the city?

Any tips for maintenance would be great as well.

Be prepared for a steep learning curve along with this bike I have seen some guys spending countless man hours to keep their bikes in fantastic condition. Hopefully you will manage it as well. All the best!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

try pudupet ,or gp road , for parts , indicators should be available ,there off the shelf , for the kicker you can use the ones from the tvs max/samurai they are the same, side panel is difficult ,your best bet will be to find used oe samurai panels and get them painted, if possible do post a few pics of your ride

Are you implying that I paid too much?

The bike seems to be in decent condition. The only major trouble is it takes a while to start if it's been left unused for over 5-6 hours. Should sort it out soon.

Otherwise, I'm having trouble getting used to the gears.

Oh, yeah. Having mostly ridden a scooter, it is definitely a steep learning curve. But so far it's been fun, even if the bike has frustrated me a few times. Getting used to the gears is a pain.

Hmm. I'll have to visit Pudupet soon. I'm a bit wary though. I've heard it's unsafe to take your bike there as it might get stolen. What do you think?

I need help from a Shogun expert in Madras

              Hey,

I recently purchased a Suzuki Shogun. Now I'm not a bike aficionado by any means, but I got it to fulfil a wish from my childhood.

Since I don't know much about two-wheelers, and two-strokes in particular, could somebody here have a look at my new ride and help me get it to premium shape? I just need advice, really.

In return for your kindness, you shall have a pint or two from me. No TASMAC, promise.

                Hi Friend,
I am also from Chennai-Velachery. Pudupet - Just opposite to CC Bank you can find a good mechanic named Fakoor Bhai. I have visited him several times, once I have left my bike with him for 2 days. Better you to take one of your friend with you. He can take care of bike while you are visiting the shops for spare parts.

It is good thing if you can explain how to find a good mechanic without somebody's recommendation.

@Nidin: my friend, just because you have a good rapport with your mech and he does a good job on your bike doesnt mean that he will show the same diligence while working on somebody elses bike, because he may not share the same rapport with the owner ,or the make of bike will be different than what he is used to, or he is simply too drunk , there are more than enough stories of the so called good, great ,excellent mechs recommended by some taking newbies for a ride , i myself has been there ,and let me tell you it is feels bad to feel ripped of and worse to have my ride turned into crap , 90% of an mechanics average income comes from tightening chains , changing oils , adjusting brakes , replacing busted lights and cables and an ocassional sparkplug change or a fork oilseal replacement , you might have done only these things in your bikes and the guy must have done it well , ina short period of time , and for a good rate , now you recommend this mech to a guy who is owning a tired old bike which he has bought because of his sentiments , he is liable to be ripped simply because, of his desire to see it in mint condition which will be exploited to the fullest . It will start with replacing of parts first minor slowly but surely moving onto bigger and costlier not to mention scarce parts , reaching a point where the poor sod will have to leave the bike with the mech for a long while because the parts necessary are not available or he simply has no time to concentrate on his pride and joy , now the bike will be at the mercy of the mech where it will find itself abandoned in a corner of his shop (if it is big enough ) or left to the mercy of elements with similar other specimens , simply because he too has no time to work on it because he will find it more profitable to concentrate on the jobs that earns him the 90 percent of his income , now if the owner manages to find the part that was missing , the mech will in all probability just fix it with the least amount of diligence just to get rid of the pestering owner, the owner after taking delivery realizes that the bike isnt performing as he expected , heck its even worse than before , he now runs back to the mech complaining only to hear the three standard replies of an indian mech , 1) it will get better after 1-2k kms 2)its only in your mind/you didnt do as i said 3) it was always like that even new from the factory .
After he receives the mentioned replies a couple of times he will slowly realise that he had been had ( i know this because ive been there and it sucks)
If you want to get it done the right way then find a decent mech close to your home so that you dont have to leave your bike at the mercy of the mech , and more importantly you can have full control of what is being done and what is being replaced ,and the only way to get a bike rebuilt the right way in india is to hang above the head of the mech like the sword of damocles and get it done in front of your eyes
always remember the coin always has 2 sides , for every man who swears by some thing there will be 2 who will be swearing at it

@IrishRoadeo : please get in touch with seniors like @psr sir and request them to take a look at your bike ,they will be able to give you a good idea as to the current condition of your bike and as to what needs to be done , the pints wont be necessary

                        Friend,

I understood what you are saying. But here he was afraid of visiting Pudupet, that's why I have directed him to a safe place. I have visited this mechanic several times with my and my friend's different bikes. (Last week also with a CBZ ). I have seen retired police& army officers with bullet also coming there. However you are saying right as something feel good to somebody doesn't mean good for everybody.

Pudupet is a good place for getting Parts.Just be very very careful with your belongings.Don't come with any jewels and look simple with a Track pant and T-Shirt or something like that and also with a Basic Nomia Phone and a Torn Purse so that...LOL,You might feel safer.Shogun parts are available in Pudupet but you need too search a lot for them.If you are changing the Piston,Go for ART Pistons and avoid SAM at all costs.Repainting the bike,You can either use the Blackred theme or Silverred theme or altogether a Custom one of your choice. Please do get the front Bikini fairing and don't install those round Headlamps,Kills the look and makes it look like a Samurai.Avoid So-Called Performance kits from Pudupet. If you have more money,Please do look into improving the breaking performance. The RTR Disc Brake is one of the best petals around,Will boost the braking performance drastically.Oh,Please do get those RVMs as they look very cool !

Thank you. That's very informative. Would you recommend taking my bike to Shogun? That's what I'm afraid about. I've heard people steal the bikes before breaking them apart for spares.

Since you live in the city, would you mind having a personal look at my bike whenever convenient for both of us?
