• My new Yamaha RX 100. Need help!

Dear xBhpians,

This will be a long post as I have quite a few questions to ask. I am from Chennai and a newbie to this forum.
Since my schooldays and college days, I always wanted my first gear bike to be an RX100. My parents offered to buy me a KTM Duke 200 and even a Benelli TNT 25. But I fixated on the RX100.
After a lot of searching and hunting finally found a 1991 RX100 in a very good condition. The seller quoted the price at Rs. 49,000/- Negotiated it to Rs.45,000/- and bought it.

Took delivery of the bike on 05/10/2017 (My birthday!!) and bought her home.

This is the condition of the bike when I bought it.

After a week of me and my friend (who also owns a RX 100) riding the bike we noticed the following problems.
Excuse me if any of the problems listed below sounds too silly. I'm not a motorhead but I'm absolutely in love with this bike.

1. When I ride the bike past 3rd gear or when I bump into some potholes I hear a chain noise at the rear. I went to a local mechanic and he fixed it. But the sound is back again in two days. What could be the problem?

2. When I park the bike (in side stand or center stand) for a few hours, the bike doesn't start easily. I have to do 5-10 kicks with the choke on to start the bike. Even after starting it takes time for the bike to move in 1st gear. I kind of chokes when I accelerate and it gets switched off.
What could be the problem?

3. I hear a rattling noise in the engine when its running. What could be the problem?

4. The sound of my RX100 is different from the other RX 100's. It sounds on a much lower note (bass kind of sound). Not the usual crisp and clear RX sound. What should I do to get the stock sound?

5. Since it's my first gear bike and that too a two-stroke, I am new to this 2T oil thing. Which oil should I use? Is using the autolube advisable or shoud I mix it straight to the petrol tank as I usually do? Also the quantity of oil to petrol.

6. I want to do a complete checkup or service of the bike or even restore it to a better condition. Please recommend some trustable and good mechanic anywhere in Chennai who can fix these issues for me. (I'm from Mogappair area).

7. Also want to know where to get the following genuine Yamaha parts in Chennai and also the cost for each of the belowitem.
-> Speedometer
-> Pilot box assembly
-> Kicker
-> Rear mudguard/fender
-> 6V Battery
-> Side Utility box

Also a total estimated amount for all the above issues and spare parts. A approx. amount would be fine just to know how much I have to save up (I'm still a student!)

Please help me on the above issues.

Thanks in advance.

Re: My new Yamaha RX 100. Need help!

1) Either not tightened properly or a worn out chain & sprocket kit
2) Flooded carb with lean tuning (I assume)
3) Piston slapping noise / crank noise
4) Check if it is OE silencer with proper core
5) Autolube + Premix is safe bet, any branded oil should do the job
7) Speedo : 500/-
Pilot box assembly : 110/- each
Kicker : 360/-
Rear mudguard/fender : 9xx/-
6V Battery : no idea, I suggest for 12V conversion
Side Utility box : You mean the tool box? around 100/- (i don't remember if it includes the lock)

Thanks for the approval and reply.

1) How to check if its an OE silencer? Any markings??
2) Autolube + Premix means fill up the oil tank as well as mix it with petrol? Is it okay to do that?
3) Does 12V conversion also call for a change in the wiring or existing ones can be used?
4) Please suggest me a good mechanic in Chennai (I'm from Mogappair area) and should I get the parts on my own or just leave it to the mechanic?

Sorry for too many question but I'm curious.

1) Hard to differentiate clones, but still with the welding (mostly the inner baffle spot welds) quality we could identify. Few fake silencers were very light in weight and came with different position for inner core screw hole
2) Add 1% (or max 2%) premix along with autolube (for 2 reasons, to keep the fuel tank rust free, as a guardian angel in case of autolube failure)
3) Existing harness can be used (coil end socket need to be modified if you are about to use 135 coil. If it is only a rewind job, no modifications required)
4) Sorry, I don't have any contact from your area

Re: My new Yamaha RX 100. Need help!

Hi there,

As a forum member, all those issues you facing are rectifiable. Hope that gives you a confidence. Here there are many who had blogged their restorations so you need not worry about bike issues. Everything can be resolved and bring your bike back to stock or how it is supposed to be.
Mr.Boss has already answered your questions and now you have a direction. He is another senior member of this form who could give you a good guidance.

I would only say .. read read read the restoration threads to understand what is what. There are several restoration/performance builds threads available from years ago.
Not all would make sense when you read them for the first time, atleast get familiarize with terms used etc.

Remember, RX spares are not in regular supply and many core components are discontinued. So kindly seek guidance if you were told to change any parts by mechanics.

Another useful tip that I can give you is..

when you post your query, be detailed, if you don't know what is it called, post a picture and mark it, describe as much as you can... vehicle condition, how it sounds, when the issue comes up, when does it stops, etc. Since members are not seeing the bike in person, so the words might not be describing exact issue. It also helps others to understand and narrow down the issue and suggest you better solution.

Probably worn out sprocket

Check the carb. If carb tuning doesn't help, then check the jet.

Not exactly sure what kind of noise you are referring to.

First check if there is too much of soot in the exhaust. The previous owner might have cleaned/chromed the outer without cleaning the carbon deposits on the inside. If the inside is clean and still the exhaust note is not crisp, then check if the exhaust is original with unmodified core.

Premix will avoid rusting inside the fuel tank but you might end up cleaning the carb frequently compared to autolube. One risk of autolube is that you never know when it might stop working and if it stops then you would risk your engine with a seizure.

I know a mechanic who is very proficient with RX. In fact, he was the one who rebuilt an RX100 for my friend from scratch and also retro-fitted it with a 5th gear. I too maintained my RX135's services with him. But, he is near perambur. Let me know (PM me) if you still need his contact.

Considering the bike for a long term usage, should I get a new chassis or get it repaired by welding (if possible)?

If it can be repaired, where?

If new chassis is to be purchased where can I get one in Chennai? and its cost?

I also read threads regarding the legal issues for changing the chassis. Pls clarify.

Thanks in advance.

1) Looking at the extent of damage I suggest to get it replaced with a new one
2) If you are still looking to get it repaired, PM me. Remember, the cost of repairing + painting should be close to the new one
3) Safe bet - from authorized dealers (if they are ready to support you) I wait for Sriram to give a reliable pointer, else PM me. Should cost around 4k
4) New frame with proper invoice shouldn't be an issue

If cost of repairing and painting is going to cost close to new ones then I might as well go for a new frame.

A local dealer in my area quotes a new original frame at around 5K and he says its genuine Yamaha part. but I don't know if I can rely on him.

I would like to know where to get a new original frame.

The chassis can be restored. The advantages of restoring the chassis us that you don't have search for she'd to punch number.

As Mr.Boss said, we need to take a due consideration of cost as well.

I would rather suggest you to speak to RTO to know the procedure to change chassis.

If you buying chassis, preserve the bill for RTO documentation.

I would suggest you to ring Mr.Boss to take it further.
