  • RX100/ RXG/ RX135: Front Disc Brake Conversion related queries

    Hi all,
I had been going through many threads in this forum in the last few days looking for information on installing Front Disc Brakes on my '97 RXG. I have definitely found some info (thanks to the xBhp and RX community) and that has popped up a few more queries. So I thought of starting a new thread with all my queries related to this topic.

To start with, mine is a 1997 Yamaha RXG model. From the info gathered so far from various RX restoration threads, Gladiator and Pulsar 150 disc brake sets are usually preferred for this conversion and we would need to buy the entire disc brake set along with the front suspension tube, inner tube and springs (please correct me if I am wrong). Here are my queries:-

    1) Out of the two, i.e., Gladiator and Pulsar 150 disc sets, which one would be a better choice and why?
    2) How do you compare the two ?
    3) Are there any specific modifications required for the conversion, or is it just a 'buy and fit' method?
    4) Can anyone please list the spares required for this conversion?
    5) Is it required to change the T and the crown too?
    6) I have a 18 x 2.75 wheel as of now. Can I use the same rim with the new Gladiator/Pulsar setup?
    7) How successful and effective is this conversion? Pros and cons ?

Requesting the RX owners in this forum who have done this conversion on their bikes to please guide me in this process.

    Thanks in advance...

        1) Out of the two, i.e., Gladiator and Pulsar 150 disc sets, which one would be a better choice and why?
        A. Pulsar 150 ones are more common and easy to source. My brother's RX135 has it and it does the work really well.

        2) How do you compare the two ?
        A. Pulsar's setup will be cheaper and easy to source again.

        3) Are there any specific modifications required for the conversion, or is it just a 'buy and fit' method?
        A. You'll have to check if the forks fit on your existing T. My brother's 135 has the entire handle and front setup from Pulsar (minus the wiring harness and meter).

        4) Can anyone please list the spares required for this conversion?
        A. Front Forks, Master Cylinder, Brake lever, Calliper, Rotor/Disc Plate, Drive Kit, Meter Cable, Brake Hose and Kit.

        5) Is it required to change the T and the crown too?
        A. Can't say about the crown but you may need to change the T. Get it checked.

        6) I have a 18 x 2.75 wheel as of now. Can I use the same rim with the new Gladiator/Pulsar setup?
        A. First gen Pulsar setup with spoke had 18 inch wheels. You can use the hub from the first gen pulsar and in your existing rims. You will need new spokes though.

        7) How successful and effective is this conversion? Pros and cons ?
        A. Braking is more stable and controlled. So far, I've not seen any downside to this, apart from the fact that the light weight of the bike makes it a bit dangerous to brake hard in emergency situations.

Thanks a lot Bismaya. That clarifies my doubts to a good extent. Will visit the store to get a quotation of cost of spares tomorrow.

            Hi all,

Visited a few shops yesterday to check the cost and availability of the spares required for the modification, i.e., the front suspension and and front disc brake setup of a Pulsar 150.

Bajaj showroom gave a rough estimate of around 9k-10k for the entire Disc Brake and Front Absorbers setup, but then surrendered that they won't be able to source the parts as these parts are out of supply.

A spares retailer gave an estimate of about 5k-6k. Unfortunately the spoke-hub was not available with any of the retailers or even the showroom.

As of now, a local mechanic who modifies 2-stroke bikes has promised to get me the entire setup (used) for 4k. Will get the next update on Saturday.

Buying a decent one in a used condition is your best bet. That's what mine has. Also, buy the forks of Pulsar 150 Classic (Round Headlamp) or else they won't fit the RX Tee.

Nice find! Best of luck I'm also planning on investing a front disc setup for my bike.

                    Hi guys,
                    Finally, its done.

Front disc brakes installed in my RXG.

Disc plate is of a Pulsar 150 old model, but the suspension system is from it's successor, the DTSI model, hence I had to broaden the T and the T-plate/crown holes slightly in the lathe. The brake and clutch levers and yokes were replaced with the pulsar ones along with the bar ends.
The brakes are working pretty well now. Here are the pics of the process:

Hey Guys, I am getting an old pulsar front-disc-brake setup for my rx100. Now, I am worried whether it will have a provision to use the brake switch from rx series. Could anyone please confirm the same? If it does not, then what do I need to do to install one? Appreciate your time & help.

You should use the switch from Pulsar and change the 2 pole socket to 2 independent bullet connectors (from RX switch)
For neat & secure installation, get new bullet connectors and crimp them with insulators.
Other option involves wire cutting, use the wire and connectors from existing RX brake switch.

Thank you so much, Mr. Boss! I will try as you suggested once I receive the parts.
