  • 1998 Yamaha RX Err...New Bike!

Hello everyone,Hope you're all doing well!

This is Bharath,This is my new account here on xBhp. I used to have a 2001 TVS Suzuki Max 100R and enjoyed building it and riding it! But one fine day, The bike was sold to a close friend and I also wanted an upgrade but with 2 rules: It should be a 2 stroke and one that can be used as a daily commuter... Now you may think 4T makes more sense in my case,Yes it does,But I don't think commuting on the 2 strokes are 'bad' in any sense. They are a lot of fun! I love riding old bikes and working on them,so I was generally more inclined on old 2 strokes.

First off,my biggest challenge was to convince my father that I am getting a 2 stroke as he was generally not that happy on me riding rustbuckets and being happy about it lol but finally I was able to convince him as I had maintained my previous motorcycle very well!

I was torn between the Suzuki Shogun and Yamaha RX135 4 speed.

Suzuki Shogun : One mad powerhouse from the house of TVS. Highly stressed and overengineered for it's times (Factory Fitted Megaphonic Exhaust acting as an Expansion Chamber). I was also having some experience on working with TVS-Suzuki with my old Max 100R,so the grounds would be quite familiar, Bike is extremely rare here and owning one would be awesome. But like almost everybody told me, It's strictly NOT for everyday commuting, Parts are difficult to source and the quality is very iffy. Stressed internals mean that reliability is thrown outta the window, 20kmpl efficiency... Biggest problem for me was the examples present here - None had valid papers(No FC for long time), Most had engines with sleeved blocks, Many of it's parts missing (Speedo+Tacho console,Mirrors,Front Mask - All rare and expensive items)

Yamaha RX135 4 Speed: Probably one of the best 2 stroke motorcycles India ever got, with a perfect strike of balance between power, efficiency and reliability! 4TL00 Block Made about 12Bhp and felt so peppy in the city conditions and also can cruise comfortably at 80-90km/h. Twin Downtube chassis felt so much more stable at higher speeds than Suzuki's single downtube one. Yamaha's build quality was also noticeably better than that of TVS-Suzuki Bikes (except the Japanese AX ofcourse). Many told me that it had a healthy fuel efficiency figure (35-40kmpl) for it's power output and was also quite reliable, Parts support is very strong and even the aftermarket support is also huge for the entire RX series in general. Biggest challenge for me was to find a reasonably priced one.

So,The RX it was! Searched on OLX, Quikr for a few days, found a few 135s but wasn't happy with it.Few more days, found a 1998 'Yamaha RXG',Spoke to the owner, Met him the next day, test rode the bike, loved it, had valid papers with FC and Insurance (not too many days left though). Owner had the price at 42K,Started bargaining and got it for 31K. I'm the 4th owner. Did the needful work of checking before going ahead with the purchase: If the block is original or fake - Showed 4TL00 and it was an 'E-2' bore, RC numbers and bike numbers matching, Checked the papers: It stated a '1998 Yamaha RXG' that's black in colour.IIRC, There was no RXG in 1998. But as you will see in the photos, It looks completely different.

So the identity crisis goes something like this: The bike is legally a Yamaha RXG as per the RTO. But RXG's production was stopped in 1997, This bike was registered on 12th Jan 1998. Mechanically, I feel it is a last batch RXG but surprisingly it has the YEIS system(Only the 135 came with one IIRC). Looks wise, It looks like an RX100 - Something which either one the previous 3 owners might have done... Maybe he wanted an RX100 so he used this RXG to look like a 100 using the red colour scheme and RX100 Monograms.

You can see the bike now!

check the tank for rust, pull out the dent if possible and get the seat re upholstered, also check what battery you are running with those horns

Yes,The Tank’s Inner surface has rust but not as much as my previous bike.So premixed fuel should take care of keeping the tank safe. But sadly,The tank’s tap side seems to have been wielded. So that’s there :/ Otherwise no problems of any leakage or anything.I have to get it repainted/replaced to black one soon as the RC states the colour as black and I don’t want no trouble with that.

Yeah,Seat work will be done soon hopefully.I hate this seat,it’s very hard, you feel like you are sitting in the bike and not on the bike.Makes the whole experience feel cramped and uncomfortable.Thinking of getting the 135’s seat with the metal underplate.

I have removed the battery. It’s one Amaron one which has leaked and caused some serious frame rust which needs immediate attention.I’m just regularly coating it with some Gear Oil to keep the rust from further spreading.

I took those useless horns off. They don’t work and they just rattle so badly. So got rid of them!

        UPDATE :

So after nearly a week of riding and messing around with the bike, here is what I found :

The bike starts up fine, but there was detonation problem sometimes. So after starting up,The engine felt so smooth compared to my old Suzuki. But then the gearshifting was quite bad as it felt quite clunky and hard,I am thinking that the clutch and pressure plates are gone,As the engine is slipping at higher RPMs.Some Clutch bell rattle noise is there.Otherwise it was fine. The tank and the horns were quite irritating as I found them to rattle quite a lot when I am riding,so much so that I am not able to hear the engine but only the rattle. Then the electricals, they are all dead for the most part. The bike came with a battery but it was useless as it had leaked and caused massive damage to the frame as the acid ate through the paint and caused parts of the frame to rust pretty badly.Due to the fact that two horns were installed,The wiring looked like a bird’s nest - A complete screwup. So I’ll be changing the entire harness,Getting a new battery and 4 indicators soon.I really love how stable the bike feels in speeds of 60kmhr.It’s noticeably better than my old Suzuki. The brakes felt decent as well, but can do better. Also I opened the LH Cover to check and to my surprise THE OIL TANK WAS DRY!!
There wasn’t even a single drop of oil.So I’m guessing that the oil pump was dry and the bike was ridden fully premixed.

        My fixes :

First things first,I needed mirrors so got them FIEM ones.I also got rid of that ugly tank bag.Click image for larger version

Then I found the fuel tap started to leak soon after,so got one A.R fuel tap which is doing a nice neat job for now!

Then I visited Sriram sir’s place and learned a lot from him! Got a new exhaust muffler with him,to my surprise, the muffler present in the bike was cut to half for more sound. So this new muffler has a nice and silent tone to it.

Sriram sir retuned my carb which helps in so much ways as the bike starts within 2 kicks everytime and he also told me that the spark plug which I’m running is not the right one,So I got two BPR7HS plugs here. One installed and one as spare in tool box

Then I found some cracks in the Intake Manifold,so I also got that replaced!

Then I got the junk like the crashguard and horns removed from the bike

I had to fix the tank rattle,so I took the seat and tank off, cleaned the frame, got new tank rubbers and installed. Now the tank is far more sturdier and not rattling.

At the same time,I wanted to check if the block is â€Orginal Stadard boor saar’ which I was already sure it wasn’t...It is a 0.5mm/2nd oversize bore.To my eyes,Unfortunately It looks like a sleeved one.But as per reserve to reserve method of mileage testing,I’m
getting 30kmpl in mixed riding conditions.

Overall,I’m happy with the bike.Worthy upgrade over my old Suzuki!

This is how she currently looks!

OK sure! Thanks for the info. What sprockets do I go for ? I’m a city rat and would love good acceleration and midrange cruisability of 60kmh/r in top gear. Will the stock RXG sprocket setup be good ? Or should I go for RX100’s one ?

            Thank you!

You can go with stock 4 speed 135 sprocket setup. 16/34 which gives a good initial acceleration. If you want further, change the rear tyre and rim to 16" yezdi. Enjoy the ride.

He is still not sure (based on the latest information I have) if it is RXG or RX135.
135 spec on RXG will kill wheel end torque
