owning and maintaining a bullet is an experience in it self. there are so many things to take care of, so many little little things that can possibly go wrong and do go wrong. So i would suggest, not to freak out or get intimidated by it, but take it easy, and get to understand your machine.

Dont abuse a RE, or maintain it badly. It will break down when you need it the most. Respect it and take care of it, and it will deliver when you least expected it to.

This is what ive learnt in 6 years of owning one.

If you graduate from a regular 100-150 cc to an Enfield, or if the RE is your first bike, then you might be frustrated in the beginning. But the key is to run it in properly for the first 2000 kms and the next 200,000 km will be hassle free. I have had my RE Electra for the last six years and the only things I had to change were the rear sprocket and chain, and brake drums. This too because I tour a lot and there is higher wear and tear. Otherwise, my mechanic says that my RE is maintained like brand new

The only thing which the Enfield bothers is the oil leaks, but it will be ok after a couple of services. (read change new gaskets). Just get it serviced on time and everything will be hunky-dory.

And also learn to do basic things, like clutch/accelerator wire change, spark plug maintenance and basic electricals for those emergency moments.

It is not very difficult at all, but the accelerator cable change can be a bit tricky because you have to open up the carb and then insert the head of the cable. Take some practice to get used to it. Clutch wire is relatively easy, though.

But these two things can be a lifesaver... Wires in the RE give way every year and half or so. Depends on how the cables are tuned.
